mcmurry sick chicks please post here

My point was - it WAS 8°F when I went to the post office, and I only lost 4 of the 27 chicks in the first 24 hours. Two were squashed in the box (which, BTW, had no other heat source other than the chicks themselves). It was my first time ordering chicks, and may be the last if I cancel the order in May. If it was the cold that was causing everyone else's problems, then wouldn't I have lost all of my chicks?
Unless I just got lucky and got super-chicks that can handle the cold, then it's got to be something other than that.

E.T.A. I did contact MMH, they credited me the 4 chicks, even though two of them were the "free packing peanuts". I have also contacted them with regards to my concerns created by the posting here, and was told that they symptoms people are posting were contributed to by the cold. I call BS on that one.

My parents ordered about 50 chicks. I'm unsure as to the breeds but I know they got some Anericanas and a variety of different types. They have almost all came down with this strange sickness so be sure to SEPERATE YOUR CHICKS WHEN THEY PRESENT WITH ANY SYMPTOMS!!! I live in San Francisco and went home for the weekend to the northern bay area to visit my parents and in 3 days about 4 more chicks began to exhibit signs of weakness in their legs and lethargy. I think my parents have about 25 chicks left (half of them have died) and about 10 can't walk and are being hand fed by my Mom. The sick ones are being seperated one by one now, I'm not sure if this is contagious among the others in the group or some type of genetic disease.

One important question . . . . I'm probably a little paranoid but has anyone felt ill after receiving the chicks???? I was at my parents home for 3 days (the chicks are being kept indoors) and now I am experiencing some type of viral URI. Just checking if anyone else is experiencing the same thing. Please don't lecture me on how I could have contracted the illness elsewhere, I am just trying to see if anyone else is experiencing the same symptoms. I have a dry throat and I'm sneezing a lot. It's almost like I have an allergy, but I've never had these symptoms before because I don't have allergies (well for the past 21 years I haven't had any). I've never felt sick around any type of animal let alone a baby chick. I know probably overreacting but thanks for your attention.

Oh my parents got the chicks from McMurray also. Nothing is seeming to help --> medicated food, warmth, nutrient enriched water. I wonder if this is a pathogen or a genetic disease. Hmmm. . . . .

Thanks for the clarification on your post, Mrs. AK. Still, what I said about cold in general is true. Any stressor on a chick right away can cause death by weakening their defenses. Cold is a biggie. Pay attention to what Terrie just told you. Let's not just continue this here-call McMurray and let them get involved in resolving this situation for each of you.

You are right, Speckled Hen... it was a rookie mistake on my part, one that will not be made again. One reason why I'm breeding my own.
Apparently someone a couple of pages back DID contact MMH, and was told that they were aware of the problem and that they were working on it. But until we know for sure (I've called them twice already) I'm just not getting warm fuzzies about ordering my breeding stock from them.

Just curious, though... did y'all have similar problems this time LAST year from MMH?

Erin no one has said anything of the kind here you can however develop allergys later in life not uncommon and certain allery meds can make it worse or you just have a cold and as far as contracting any thing from chick or any other animal is highly unlikely not saying that it doesn't happen just highly unlikely but if you feel lucky I would play the lotto.......Get well soon!!!!!!!

Hopefully someone can distill this 29 pages of info and then get it to MM and anyone else they feel should evaluate the situation, whether the Iowa Ag folks, a university vet, or whomever. Great that it's all in one place, in case collectively a pattern emerges. There were other posts on BYC as well that were referred to this thread because of their similarity. Their info should ideally be included as well. I hope the heartfelt efforts of everyone to convey their experiences will result in illuminating what is going here. There is probably enough info collected now to move to that next step. Hopefully it will result in saving some chicks....

FunnyFarm, Could you email me you phone #. I tried to email you back but I can't send, only receive? Thanks
Erin, Everything my husband & I could find says Marek's does not affect us, only birds.

I did not recieve sick chicks- my 26 chicks from mcmurray arrived this am and all are healthy, eating , drinking and being chicks. I am in Montana, and it was 20' when I went to pick them up at 7 am. That being said, these are newly hatched chicks, and people need to realize, you will loose some at times. I have been so far lucky.
