MEALWORMS - Raising Them the Easy Way

I have redworms in a tub in my "chicken" room (where I put the incubator, the hatcher and 2 brooders), I put all the manure from my brooders right into the worm tub.

I plan on finding time to fish this summer.

I absolutely HATE buying worms when I have all of this wonderful chickie poop to grow them in.

I put all of my houseplant trimmings, the chickie poop and newspaper bedding in the tub. Add some water to keep it damp, and just watch the worms grow.

. . . and then I wonder why my boyfriend doesn't move in with me. I have a cat room, so the dogs can't get to the catbox and eat cat 'stuff'. A chicken room for the chickens and worms......

I don't see anything wrong with this set up, do you guys ? Heck, it is only a little chicken fever causing it all !

I wonder if I could find time and space to add a meal worm tub ???

meal worms are soo easy...all it is ,is a rubbermaid tub....fill it with oats for their bedding and food and feed them some veggie scraps...(potatos,carrots,squash...)

I think mealworms and earthworms want different environments - the mealworms want a dry bedding/food of meal (bran) with only a little moisture via some veggies (carrots, potatoes). The earthworm / wiggler worms want a sponge-moist environment like a compost pile - I think there are other threads on how to grow that type of worm. I don't think you can raise them together, but you could raise both separately!

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! I like Black Soldier Fly Larvae because you just throw the food in and they self harvest. No maintenance except to clean out the container once a year to start over in the spring.

Then add a dog that belongs to my boyfriend........

2 aquariums full of fish that belong to my son and his girlfriend, plus their cat......

and a cat and a dog that belong to my daughter.......

I think a few thousand meal worms will fit right in

Ok, it's been over a month that my beetles have been having sex in the kitchen (in their plastic shoebox). No sign of worms. How long should this take for the worms to show up? My house is typically in the 60s.

Red Hen - do you have worms yet? Your beetles started about the same time as mine...
