MEALWORMS - Raising Them the Easy Way

I soooo want to do the worm thing, I am trying to talk DBF into it. It took six months to talk him into chickens, so if I'm persitant maybe I can have them by end of summer.

Unfortunately the site you originally suggested now charges a good amount fo shipping! Almost $25 just to ship!

But that's normal among all the online mealworm farms. I just found someone in PA that will meet me this weekend, so I can save on shipping.

If you don't have a gazillion chickens to feed, you can start with just a few hundred worms; which you can buy at Wal-Mart. They are in the bait fridge (yes by the fishing poles)!

Your local pet store may have them too.

This might be a dumb question but why raise meal worms? Are they good for the chickens as far as vitimans go? I was just wondering smile

Because they are hands down the favorite treat. You can use them to get your chickens to come near you if they are skittish or you can just take pleasure in watching them enjoy.

I bought 2000 twice now from Drs Foster & Smith with different results each time.

The first order was shipped in two separate boxes using newspaper strips as packing and took a few days to arrive. The worms were smallish and I'm not sure the numbers were there. That colony ended in tragedy due to incompetence on my part.

The second order was packed in a single nifty "live bug" box with egg crate packing, came the next day, the worms were quite large and they were definitely all there if not more. The sound of them all moving was LOUD. I was very happy with that order and as of a couple of days ago I have baby worms!

The shipping price is a bit high, not worth it for the first order but I think it was for the second. I would end up paying $150 for 2000 mealworms at my pet stores prices.
I have no idea why the two orders were so different but if the second order is the norm for them then I'm a loyal customer from now on.

Okay all you experienced meal worm farmers...I'm trying to picture this meal worm farm, do you end up with dead beetle carcasses that need to be picked up? That seems like it could take a while, if you dealing with them by the hundreds.... how do you do that?
