You don't need an animal friendly ointment. Neosporin, Bacitracin or a generic equivalent will do. Even Vaseline in a pinch. Just make sure it does NOT contain a pain-relieving ingredient, as this is toxic to chickens. And don't let it dry out. It will heal. Did I tell you you can make a saline solution, put it in a spray bottle, spray it good twice a day, gently blot it dry with a clean towel, then put the ointment on?

I think it's okay for a one-time use, if you can get something else tomorrow. Or ... have you been using it all along? If so, just switch to plain Vaseline or petroleum jelly if you have some.
