By the Grace of God she will survive.......
This is Gracie. Yesterday for some reason I was on Craigs list just looking around and found an add for a hen that needed help. add said that she was being picked on and they wanted to give her away because they did not want to kill her.
Dont know why again, I replied immediatly that I would take her no questions asked. Didnt even know where she was, what she was, how old she was. Was I STUPID!?????? So it ended up she was 30 minutes away from me. (wow, wierd one.) I got in my car and drove out to pick her up. I got there to find 3 white pullets. 1 was in a 'cage' by herself and couldn't even get up. I picked her up (she was the softest chicken i have ever felt besides my Cochins) Very skinny and a red swollen bum. No picking marks, no visible injuries. She just collapsed in my arms. I took her immediatly in hopes of helping her out.
Got her home and she drank like I have never seen an animal do. Non stop, big deep gulps. Grateful eyes looked at me so sad I cried for her. She really wouldnt eat. Picked at some crumbles, refused scrambled eggs. It looked to me like she was trying to push an egg or something out of her rear end. I have never delt with an egg blockage before. I soaked her in a warm bath, massaged, etc. She was so content in the bath. Straining to get something out though. I worked with her for an hour of so, she drank tons more and I let her rest. She fell asleep in my lap all night until we went to bed. She slept with me cuddled up in a towel. She is passing the water and poo. Runny, but poo none the less. I really did not think she would make it through the night. She did. This morning Gracie seems to be looking a little better. Little perkier. Thinking she is REALLY dehydrated. She cant really walk much and strained this morning again pretty hard. She did eat a little more. I had to leave for work, so I took her down to the Fluffy Butt Hut and made her comfortable in her own 'quarters'. We shall see....
Everyone..... meet Gracie.
