Meet "Mabelo", the majestic guardian of my flock (and my house!)

Oh, guys... Today I had to shut Mabelo in the run because he was harassing my dad, who was in my backyard. A while later, I heard him scream - Mabelo, not my dad.

He had tried to escape the run through a hole in the wire and got one of his spurs stuck. He couldn't get out of the run or go back into it. And I couldn't rescue him because he wouldn't stop moving.

I asked my dad to hold him while I removed the spur from the wire. He said: "No, YOU hold him, I take care of the spur". This is how scary Mabelo is to this grown ass man :gig

I didn't take a picture because I prioritized "saving" him... It was kind of desperating because he was screaming like he was hurting like hell... Pure drama I suppose, the spur is hard as a rock and there are no wounds (could've been different if he got one of his toes stuck in the wire, I have to fix that hole ASAP...).

But when he was finally free, he stepped over me and did this with his nails:

You're welcome, I guess.

My very first rooster, Rocky, is very much like your Mabelo, personality-wise. He is going on 9 years old, now, an old man, not as robust, but still has personality, although I believe it's more for show at this point, to protect his reputation. With 10 other Roos, each with their own, one-of-a-kind ways, I still love him & his unique, bossy, always on the verge of "ticked off" attitude. I'm the only one that can scoop him up, hold him, tend to him on my lap & get that sweet purring sound he makes when I hug him.

His day's are growing short, I can tell he will be passing on probably this year, so he is now set up with a more cushy area, with 3 other gentle, senior hens to snuggle with. He still guards, still looks forward to calling hens over when I give him mealworms or watermelon, but doesn't jump up on perches or mount the hens anymore.

In his youth, he was quite the proud intimidator! My dad avoided him & just shook his head when I'd reach right in & effortlessly scoop up a Roo that laughed an evil laugh, while fiercely puffing up his feather collar. He always laughed & puffed up at dad, gave him stink eye on a daily basis, too. 😆 Feisty Roos can certainly find a place within our hearts. ❤️

Rocky is beautiful! And he's a barred rock, like Anton, the other rooster I had (he passed away :()

I'm very fond of that breed, I even have this painting (made by a friend)
