Well, it's been over a month and my little pirate chick is growing up! For awhile there I was worried that she was a he, but now I'm fairly certain she will remain Polly (though Jack Sparrow would have been cute too!). She has a pink comb, but her feathers are all rounded and she has thin legs. I am going to take her into my friend at the feed store who vent sexes all my chicks for me. So far he has been 100% correct on any age chick so I trust him!

Polly (or Jack) is a great chicken and has no problem eating or drinking, scratching, pecking and all the other chicken-like things. I worry about her beak and needing to trim it (have no idea how to do this and am really scared to try!) but we'll see. The other chicks with her love her and think she is a walking feed bowl

They eat all the leftovers out of her beak!

We all had a sigh after reading the others eat out of her beak. But then rejoiced... we all have a purpose. Polly or Jack have a great home... Keep us updated.

I am glad you love your special RIR!!

The unique ones often become our favorite because they can triumph over their disability.

One of my chicks (BLRW) started to show a crossbeak at 4 weeks of age and it has gotten worse over the weeks. Fortunately, she still not only eats well and has a full crop every night but she has always been the biggest chick. I worried she was a he for a bit but you can tell she is definitely a pullet now! I don't have a photo of her today at 9 weeks, but here she is at 7 weeks:

You can see she looks fine here at 3 days old:

I have several special needs chickens now and yes, they do become our favorites. I have one with a spraddle leg, one who is "mentally disabled" and blind and now Jack/Polly. I also discovered the other day my little Polish has a slight cross beak. I love them all and always take more in because I truly believe they deserve a chance to live.

I had an EE with a scissor beak like that, and one eye. I always had the strangest urge to look at her and go arrrgggg like a pirate. She just reminded me of a pirate for some reason.

Anyway, she did fine, I had her for close to 2 years. I had to feed her dry mash or crumbles, since she couldn't manage pellets. I made sure I put her feed in a deep bowl so she could scoop it up. Her beak had to be kept trimmed down. She kept up with the other layers and had the best personality. She died suddenly one day her second spring. One minute she was fine, the next minute she was dead. I always figured she ahd other probelms along with her one eye and crossed beak. I wouldn't hesitate to have another.
