Metzer Farms Toulouse recomendation

I'm thinking about getting Toulouse goslings at Metzer's. I'm just not sure what kind to get. There are 4: Toulouse, French Toulouse, Tufted Toulouse, and Large Dewlap Toulouse. Which out of those 4 are the best?

Depends on what you want them for, look at the pics and the one that stands out the most to you and comes under what your wanting in a goose is the one to choose. I love the Large dewlaps but don't think they would do well on my terrain [we live on the side of a mt.] so they would be out of the question for me, see what I'm getting at? I have what they call production Toulouse and love her to pieces.

All I'm looking for is cold hardy. And I won't consider Tufted if they have any type of the same situation as Crested ducks. I also probably won't get Large Dewlap because of their prices.

I bought my Cayuga ducks from Metzer Farms, but waited too long to order Toulouse this year; Ideal had sone late hatches so I was able to get three sexed female "utility" Toulouse goslings.

They are very personable. The geese, I mean. Well, so are employees from Metzer and Ideal... but I really like the temperament of my Toulouse gander and geese. Non- tufted, not Dewlap. They don't appear to gabble in French, but I don't speak much goose. Mine are the utility or production type.

CelticOaksFarm, what are the characteristics on your Toulouse? I've considered them as well. And can I have a link to the page that shows your prices on everything? I found that once, but wasn't able to find it again. Also, what are your geese minimum order? I know your minimum for ducks is 6.

We have a new merchant account (for payments made online) so some of the pages are offline and having a make over currently. We require 2 goslings when dealing with day olds. If it is still cool/cold we also require a heat pack with them. Yes ducklings are a 6 hatchling minimum.

We have had what Metzers calls the french (nothing more than a production toulouse goose with a different label really) and we do still have the dewlaps. They sell strong stock that I have yet to ever hear anyone say anything but that they were good pets be it duck or goose purchased.

The production (french labeled) were no larger than our American geese we keep as a meat flock, they ranged about the same space during the day as well. Both processed out smaller than any of our Americans by a pound when the time came. They were active, louder than the dewlaps, ate much less feed than the dewlaps.


The dewlap flocks (buff and grey) are massive birds, with calm quiet personalities. Our buff adults are large, very large birds actually. However some of the greys are just massive. We have a goose and gander who turned 3 this year and the gander when weighed last week hit 31.82 pounds on the digital scale he stood on. His mate weighed in at 28.56 pounds last week. We will be slowly walking each pair who are set for 2014 breeding onto the scale as we move into fall. Super friendly, they are just as likely to be in our business when we are working on projects as the American or Sebastopols. They dont range as much or as far as the Americans during the day, and they eat far more then the American or production toulouse ever did.

No matter which you select you will enjoy them, geese are just special, special creatures who bring joy to a property. Extra bonus is that they also trim grass and edge fence lines and around trees while they fertilize.

I have the French 2006 import line Toulouse from Metzers, and really can't say enough good things about them.
They are huge and super productive. Mine started laying this year at the end of December, and hatched the last gosling on July 2nd. I had so many goose eggs I ran out of things to do with them. You don't need a big flock to have tons of eggs and goslings. They are great setters. By the time they are two years old they are much bigger than Americans and Cotton Patch- both of which we have raised with them. Fertility is spot on as well.

My Toulouse goose who was 1 yr in April laid a whopping 60 eggs this year, I am really hoping maybe half that many next season.

I have a pair of production toulouse that I got from Metzer's this year and I adore them. They are super friendly and beautifully colored. The goose is quite loud and a bit bigger than the gander. I hope to breed them in a couple of years to sell as local farm geese.
