Meyer Hatchery 2 questions please

Perhaps having been in the chick shipping business for many years Meyer took heed of the winter weather warnings and subsequent flight cancelations and elected not to ship. Considering thousands of flight cancellations and the fact that chicks often ride in the cargo hold of passenger aircraft, I think it would have been a wise decision on their part and for the wellbeing of the birds. Shipping anything to the northeast the past few days would no doubt have been a challenge. I'm sure the company will reship once conditions are appropriate to do so. Best of luck.

Just got off the phone with Meyer. They are saying it is out of their hands as they brought the chicks to the post office. So Meyer is blaming the post office and the post office is blaming Meyer. He said, she said. So what is my recourse? I know I can wait until after tomorrow and then probably get a refund but is there any other way anyone can think of to track down these chicks? Thank you all for your support.

They still could come today, the PO. Is terrible at tracking stuff. They should use UPS, but they don't. I am holding out hope they arrive today. Keep us posted.

Ok, I'm a bit annoyed that I know more than that employee BUT I promise you that nobody is hand scanning those hundreds of peeping packages. The chicks would come to a commercial mail dock at the back of the PO where they would be stored in a bay awaiting transfer to the sort center. Unless they are being brought to the sort center directly -- they might be. In any case, never would they cross the front counter and be scanned by hand like regular people mail packages.

This is thread is almost as bad as the nightly news!!!! We can't stand to watch the horror stories but can't NOT watch them, what a dilemma! X2 on USPS having a pitiful record of tracking info, don't know why they even bother.

Can only hope for the best and will monitor your news with optimism. Now we have another worry for our delivery besides= Must Finish Coop! BB

@debid I just called the post office in Polk, OH supposedly where they were shipped from. I spoke to a very nice women and even though she had no idea where my package was her story confirms what you are saying. So Meyer said the package was delivered to the post office but never specified which post office and I didn't ask so I don't think they were trying to be misleading. But the women at Polk, OH post office said that even though the label says Polk, OH that Meyer makes their shipping label online or whatever and that it automatically has a tracking number (so meyer saying they get the tracking number when it is actually delivered to the post office may not be true or the person is misinformed whatever) and that Meyer rarely if ever brings chicks to the local post office. They put them on a semi truck and drive them to the Cleveland, OH post office. So who knows. I've done a little googling, ok a lot of obsessive googling and found scores of complaints of people not getting tracking information, Saying the USPS is notorious for not scanning packages. Some people did not get any tracking updates until the package was delivered or out for delivery and then suddenly the tracking shows up.. None of this helps the situation but it gives me a little hope that maybe they are in transit and hopefully just maybe at least some of them will be alive. Its all I can do. My local post office is expecting another truck at 3:30 ish and 5:30pm ish and they said they will call me asap if chicks arrive. So if they still dont come by tomorrow afternoon I believe Meyer will refund my money. But I just checked and they don't really have any more of most of the breeds I was looking for but I will get what I can get and try not to be upset, as we tell the kids right? Or maybe if all is lost I will see if I can at least get a handful of chicks from some feed stores maybe this weekend or something. Not what I planned but when dealing with live animals I guess we have to be flexible. Thanks again for everyone holding my hand while I wait.

Ok, so this was my experience....

My chicks did arrive yesterday...but not to my local post office. They arrived to a USPS hub in another town. They were going to sit there for another day and then be delivered to my local PO this morning. They did call me though and said I could come pick them up from the hub if I wanted to. Buy then I was already headed to work but since they are open 24hrs I picked them up around 9pm.

They were in a heated warehouse, in a mail bin, with other boxes of chicks and covered with a canvas. When he handed me the box, it was toasty warm.

All chicks arrived alive and robust. They were well packed with nesting material and two heat packs that were actually almost too hot to hold on day 2. Now, on day 3 they are still warm.

I am holding out hope for your little ones, the USPS is used to shipping chicks even though we feel they could do so much harm...and they could I suppose...but the worker was telling me about the sheer volumes of chicks that come through this time of year and they seemed to really care.

Here's hoping they show up today....fwiw my order from Cackle...which is closer to me, has not updated any tracking info since Monday either

This is very good news!

Cackle just posted a video on the FB page about all the work that goes into shipping day, with lots of weather maps outlining anticipated weather for the 3-4 days the chicks could possibly be enroute to the addresses they have chicks going to and the detailed packing instructions they have for each order taking that into consideration. My tracking number for Cackle did not update until they got to the final PO but all the chicks were warm, alive, and well.
