Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Okay, the chickens were going crazy and all of them were clucking loudly this morning to be let out of the run around 7ish am. So I let them out with the anticipation of finding an egg, but no luck yet. Someone did nest in one of the 4 nesting boxes though, so I imagine another good sign.

Almost all of them are squatting for me now, which is so weird. I never really knew what people meant by squatting, but I sure know now. So strange. I am apparently the lead hen in the flock.

My CW is so loud now too, she was always the quiet one, now she is always yelling at me. I'm going to go out again later this morning to see if there's an egg. Think it will be real soon now!

Nancy - I'm looking forward to those pics. I understand about the rain, I think it is supposed to dry up for the rest of the week. I am so glad, I want to take pictures too. I hate all this mud, yuck!!!!!

I'm sorry she didn't make it. Hopefully you can get some more.

So we ended up ordering 9 more chicks yesterday for 7/8. Chicken math strikes again!

Lynn- I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, hope you get a egg today!

Lynn- I'm headed out soon for pics! Sounds like a few are seriously thinking about laying YAY!! I just hope one doesn't decide to lay under a bush- scour that yard!! Funny how I always thought they lay first thing in the morning but the neighbor's hens lay late morning and all afternoon. I like that schedule!
By 'squatting' do you mean you try to pet them and they sort of sink down or do they just randomly walk up to you and do it? I've never seen it so I'm curious.

Kbh-love that chicken math!! 7/8 will be here in no time!!

YAYYYYYYYY!!!!! Guess what?

I guess all that racket this morning was for a reason. Snow seems so proud now. I need to go out with an egg basket in the mornings now. She did go back into the coop, but she chose a corner to lay the egg in. I have their ladder there and it was under the ladder. So I may need to move the ladder in hopes that she'll use the nest box.

I was hearing more fussing from them around 9 to 9:30, so I thought I would check. Our house is well insulated and the coop is further down, so for me to hear them, they must have been pretty noisy. I saw Snow walking out of the coop area, so I think I got the egg soon after. It is so little, clean and white. She is the only white layer I have of the older chicks, so it is for sure her.

When they squat they actually squat down and stick their rears in the air, like they are waiting to mate, which is kind of strange to me. I just rub them on the head and back and walk away. I'm glad I can pet most of them now, but I really don't like them thinking I'm a rooster, that's the weird part.

Some of them I just have to wave my hand near them and they squat and some I reach down to pet them and they do it.

Still so happy!!!

I put the little ones out into their coop for the first time last night! They seemed to really like all of the extra space to run and flap their wings. I had planned on having them sleep out there last night, but by the time 8:00 pm rolled around, they were starting the chirp and cry pretty loud. So I told them "I'll be right back, let me go set the brooder back up for bedtime." As soon as I left the coop they started chirping and crying even louder. They did not like the thought of staying in the unfamiliar coop all night.

I put them back out into the coop this morning around 8:00 am. I used a small dog cage to carry them from the garage to the barn, and by the time I got the cage into the coop they were all shoving on the door and letting out lots of little excited peeps. As soon as I opened the cage door they came racing out. It was pretty cute! Then they all started jumping onto my head and shoulders and then jumping right back off. It was like they were using me as a human launch pad

. I'm going to try leaving them out in the coop again tonight. I left the brooder set up in the garage just in case.

I managed to get a few photos last night of them in their coop for the first time. In the last photo you can see the opening that we made to connect my two coops together. For now it is covered with chicken wire until my little Meyer girls are old enough to be introduced to the big girls. This way they can all see each other and get used to each other, but the big girls (and boys) can't get at them.

Here are some new pics of my Meyer Girls... A bit over 14 weeks...
