Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

[/quote]
Thanks everyone.. mine look like the small white rocks, but I don't know what is in them because it comes in a plain paper bag... I am going to try to experiment with a few kinds and see what the girls like... I don't like giving the girls something in bulk that I don't know what it is... I could call and ask, I suppose... :/   Nothing is ever easy...

Yes I would call. If its in a plain brown bag with no label they might be breaking down from huge bags into smaller ones for people to buy. One of my feed stores does that with feed and BOSS. It is illegal to do it because by law it has to have the analysis on it. But the chance of getting inspected is pretty small. Apparently it's the same branch that inspects gas station pumps (weights and measures) which is virtually bankrupt. I just learned all this from my Agway. Anyway, they might have that info for you

So another question about my broody silkie she is taking what seems to be a lot of breaks. About three times a day she is out for about 30-45 min. Then she jumps back up there. But if I don't get the eggs out the other boxes she has a problem returning to the right box. And I need to pick her up set her in the right box and she goes right back to that dormant look. I'm not sure what to do with her. I want to I courage her to be broody but her first week on the job is looking kinda sketch! I know it's her first time but come on girl! She does not get the concept of a work day! She is allotted 2, 15 min breaks and a 30 min lunch! That's it! But no she's got to sit and gossip and mess around..... I'm telling you I'm going to put this chick on probation if she keeps this up!
But really the last time we had broody hens was when I was a kid and I can't remember what to expect.

So I finally did it. Next week will be my one year anniversary of having chickens and I broke an egg while it was in my pocket. The worst part is that I didn't even realize it because of the heavy rain until I went to take the egg out. Oh geez!

LOL! The breaks are normal. In fact some people are trying to hatch eggs more naturally and give the eggs a break of 30 min a couple times a day. The getting back in the wrong box part is the hard part. Ours did that too. I checked on her all the time to make sure she got back in the right one.

Yuck!

We had a good and bad day today.
Good:
We picked up our second horse finally

Gilfy, our bantam EE (from Meyer), finally laid her first egg at 28 weeks old.
Here it is next to our SLP egg (from Meyer). It's almost the exact same color as our LF EE. A nice minty green.

Bad:
We've had a hawk do a couple fly overs the last week. Yesterday we came home and he was sitting on the fence that separates our backyard and the chicken's free range area. The dogs were out and he didn't care one bit. The flock was free ranging but he had his back to him and all chickens were accounted for. DH shot a pellet gun near him to scare him off. Today we come home and he was sitting on top of their enclosed area. DH couldn't shoot that direction due to things in the background so I went out there to scare him off. I got pretty close before he finally flew away. I went out to do a head count and a bunch were under the tack room so I couldn't see everyone. I was about to walk away and noticed the gate to the extra area we have was open so I thought I'd better check in there too. In the corner I could see a ton of feathers and what looked like parts of a chicken. All I could see was maybe a wing. My heart dropped and I didn't really want to go over to it but did. As I got closer I saw more feathers and blood on the rocks. I found our little BLRW tucked between a couple large rocks and the gate. Once I got over to her I could see she was at least all there, which isn't what it looked like to start. She had a bloody back but was alive and alert. I took her inside and we cleaned her up, put some antibiotic on it and wrapped her up. She is now in the hospital cage in our bathroom. The wrap has since slipped off so now she just has gauze on it. It is much less severe than our other hawk attacks. We're hopeful she'll pull through pretty quick. She is missing the skin off her back right above the tail, and has one puncture on the thigh.

And here is a good shot of our CCL pair, now 13 weeks old.

Aww poor little Wyandotte! Hope she heals well and I'm glad it wasn't worse. We've had a hawk flying over ever now and then for a month which is why we free range in the morning and evening and the bird netting we have over the run seems to be doing its job. Yesterday Rowan asked what a hawk was and I explained and he dropped to the ground and covered his head and said "I hate hawks!"

Congrats on the new horse and the first egg! It's so cute! Amelia our Golden Buff laid her first egg today too and Clara laid her fourth (she's been laying one every other day). Long story and pictures so I'll save it for a separate post.

pretty boys

Thanks they have seemed to come into maturity the past two weeks, they are definitely more fluffy now and waddles are longer. Amazing how quickly they change.

Sorry that Sandy is a male.....we have five Delaware hens and they are noisy, I can only imagine once they all start laying how loud they will be. Reagan is cute, those EE are curious!

The tops are $7.25 each at Lowes, well worth it! It is actually 2 pieces. You snap on the whole lid. The outer part stays on the bucket tight and the inner part screws up.

Yep those are the buckets I ferment with, I like the screw on lids, helps keeps the critters out!

sorry about the hawk attack, but glad she is still alive! hope she makes a speedy recovery!

LOL! I don't know anything about broodies, but, that sounds so comical!
