Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

From what I heard, once the hawks figure out the CDs are harmless, they won't work. But the bird net will.
The people I chicken sit for when they're away had rope criss/crossed over the run but I went over one day to feed them and there was a dead chicken in the run and a hawk on a branch nearby so I assume the rope wasn't enough to keep the hawk out.
What i always think about is, all these things are wild animals and they have to find their food or die. So their life depends on them figuring out all our 'fool proof' set ups and they'll try like heck to get a meal when they're hungry enough.

I was wondering if anyone has tried the CD idea or not. We do have more bird netting which I plan to use soon. Our main protection is to always keep them in the coop and run when we are not home and only free range them when I can watch them. I do worry about that one time I don't look out the window often enough. I will be happy when the chicks are chicken sized and are just too big for hawks. I love having chicks, but the constant worry makes it less fun.

I think Alice (white leghorn) is going to start laying tomorrow!! She had started squatting every time I walk past her, and she has been checking out the nest boxes, and she even made a nest in one of my cat boxes in the barn.

Does anyone have a picture of your Leghorns when they started laying that I can compare to?

We have a lot of Turkey Vultures here. We live by the woods and on a gravel road, so there is plenty of road kill for them. About two weeks ago it rained and one of the vultures came and sat on the telephone pole by my barn to air out it's wings. My chickens we inside, and they were chattering and the roosters were growing, and the vulture didnt seem to take any interest in them. A few times I have seen as many as 25-30 flying around in circles over the woods.

We have one large hawk that live out in the woods somewhere, and it occasionally comes flying around our yard screeching and screaming. Whenever I see it I just round up the girls and close them in until it goes away. I think the hawks nest is pretty far away from our house, because I only see the hawk maybe 3 times a year.

Where we used to live we had massive amounts of hawks. We never had any get my chickens, but several times they would fly in circles around my barn. We will most likely be moving in the Spring, and I'm really hoping the new house won't have hawks. We are hoping to find a house with a good amount of acerage for more privacy and so we don't have to deal with neighbors who hate my chickens anymore. I'm sure my noisy rooster labeled us as the "annoying neighbors". We live in the country, and I'm allowed to have roosters here, so people need to get over themselves. If you live in the country, expect to hear animal noises. I keep telling myself I need to get a sign like this one.

We had about the same amount of vultures circling my silkies one of the first times they were out. Your lucky I still have at least 2 years till we can move. I love that sign!! If you ever find one please let me know where. How is Sunni today?

Im getting a Barred rock, white cochin, golden buff, and light brahma!! I am counting down days!!! I am also looking to get 2 female silkies(Black and white) but I want show quality and I dont know where to get them... any ideas?

Nice assortment, I like your coop as well. I'm sure it won't be long till chicken math sets in and you get more!

Oh, ok. We have a pellet gun that can do some serious damage but as i know zero about guns I just assumed they were all alike

Yay!! It is so much fun having them and watching them grow. I love my BR from Meyer. She is my friendliest and loves to fly onto my shoulder! She constantly chatters to me while I'm out there with them. The 17th will be here in no time!

Thats awesome!! Do you know about the other breeds at all??? My brother has the white cochin and BR and I have the LB and GB(Happy Feet and Peep)

Sunni is doing great today. She has been trying to eat on her own, but she still can't get the food to the back of the throat without her tongue. We will most likely have to continue tube feeding her. I don't see how she could ever learn how to eat and drink on her own after she went two months without it. It almost seems like she forgot how to drink. We have tried dipping her beak in water several times and it's like she forgot what to do with the water once it's in her beak. We'll have to see what time brings us for her. It's a good thing she is so stubborn and feisty, otherwise she probably wouldn't have made it through this.

I have a white cochin and she is extremely friendly! And I have a Buff Brahma but I'm pretty sure she's half light brahma. She's half white and should be all buff colored so I'm thinking a roo hopped the fence and I have a 1/2 BB and 1/2 LB. She's pretty quiet, 25 weeks old and not laying yet but they are late to mature from what I hear and kind of hangs out by herself a lot. I think she's pretty low in the pecking order. Doesn't get picked on or anything but just kind of aloof.
All my chickens eat out of my hand, even my 2 flighty EE's that won't squat for me, but not all chickens let me pick them up. Or like to be picked up. My BA's, BR, WC like a little extra attention.

Snow started laying at 18 weeks and 2 days.

Alice is only 17 weeks and 2 days, but her comb are waddles are already larger than Snow's. Snow was such a pretty girl.

Phew, I thought the Whites were the early layers when it came to Leghorns! I don't know for sure, but I have been finding a really small white egg in the nests about every other day or so since the middle of last week, and check out the comb and wattles on my light brown Leghorn girl, Whiri (she's a little more than 16 weeks old now, but this was taken when she was 15 1/2 weeks old) :

These eggs I'm finding are just slightly smaller than my Sebrights' eggs, so it is possible that one of the Sebrights is laying them, but I don't know for sure...



Lynn, if you have a recent picture of your white Rock and how long ago she started squatting if she has started squatting, I can give you an estimated arrival date of her first egg.
