Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Quote: It looks like I'm the only one that can't shrink pics... does anyone else have an Apple and can do it?

I just tried on my Mac laptop, and if I double click on the quoted image in the editor it will open a new window that allows me to adjust the size -- but you have to type in a width or a length, you can't just use your mouse to adjust the picture size in real time. If you type in '100' for the height or width then it shrinks the pic quite a lot. This appears to be what @trsturself does as well:

Quote: Can you double click on a pic once you've quoted it? Does anything pop up? I just set the height or width to 100.

If you want the pic a bit bigger, pick a number larger than 100, if you want it smaller pick a number smaller than 100. It appears that you can just keep double clicking on the image and changing the size until you are happy with it. I still can't figure out a way to do it from my Kindle Fire though.....

good luck !

Great job on the shrinking!

I need to try out Craigslist too and see if I get takers for some of mine. Did you sell them? If you don't mind me asking, how much did you sell them for?

@NotableNancy - I mostly use a Kindle Fire to log on to BYC and I can't shrink pics either. In fact, I can't even see them in the editor when I include a quote (just their URLs). I do have a Mac laptop, so next time I'm on it and think to check BYC I will try shrinking pics in a quote and let you know how it goes.

@trsturself - my husband and I have the same problem -- we're looking for a house with property (for more chickens, etc) but keep finding houses that have recently been redone not to our taste, or houses we like that don't have the property we want. Or property we like with a house that just won't work. Like you, we're happy to do work on a house, within reason, but haven't found a good option for that. Very frustrating. Lovely fireplace, by the way.

It is hard! We (or at least I) settled on the land. I didn't really like this property much at all when we first looked at it. I liked the house though. We looked at nearly every house available on the market for over a month and nothing compared. We came back and saw this one a couple times before deciding to just make the property what I want. Now that we live here I love it! I don't want to change that much about it anymore. We have a great view that I have gotten used to and when I drive around and see other properties that I used to covet, now they don't seem as appealing anymore because they don't have our view. :)

Thanks. I'm redoing our coffee table now. It was a cherry wood that just doesn't fit this honey oak house. It's getting an antique appearance now. If I don't like it I'll just sell it. lol

Yeah! Glad it worked. I haven't tried it on my kindle yet. If I get on here on it I'll see if I can figure anything out.

FYI, around here a typical hen of laying age goes for $20-30. If it's rare or show quality it will go for more. And chickens are very common around here so it's not like there is a shortage of supply.

DH just asked if I was going to Big R today. I asked why and he said, "barred rock chicks". I'm not sure I want another but he obviously does, Marble was his favorite. I said I would ask DD if she wanted one and he replied, "or 4". So funny, he was the one that was ticked when I got the last 2 chicks, now he's telling me to get 4! So we might go down there and get him another barred rock, and maybe some EE's for us. ;)

Ok so I kinda want to post an ad on CL just to see if I'd have luck selling chicks LOL.

Also, fermenting question/observation. I am having no luck straining. The fermented layer pallets turn to such mush. I've been pouring off the top liquid. I'm hoping to get icing buckets from the bakery so I can ferment on a larger scale. Maybe I could use cheese cloth in the bucket for better straining?

A large weave cheesecloth might work but it will probably get pretty gunked up too. I didn't have much luck fermenting pellets. They stunk, got moldy, and were hard to strain. For those I just took a scoop of them and held the edge of my scooper against the edge of the bucket and tried to pour off any liquid.

So... I went to Big R to get my husband a replacement BR and ended up coming home with 7 chicks. lol! (who's surprised? no one!)
These were from a mixed bin so breeds are strictly guesses:
2 BR, 2 EE, 1 SS, 1 SLW, and 1 unknown chipmunk. The SLW was a freebie from the straight run bin because the lady thought they looked cool and wanted to know what it was so she wants me to report back. I had never seen one with white shoulders before so I wasn't 100% sure it was a SLW so I just said ok. Who's going to turn down a free chick!? lol Hopefully it's a girl. I'm pretty sure it is because it has a flat comb with no ridges.
Nothing like getting over a pet by buying a bunch more! That brings our total to 25. That's a nice even #. ;)

Here's some quick pics.

EE #1 (Blossom) in the front, SS (Freckles) in the back

SS - Freckles

EE #1 (Blossom) with BR #1 (Peg) and SS in the back

EE #2 (Clover)

Unknown (Sweetie) - chipmunk, single comb, pink legs - maybe Leghorn?

EE #2 (Clover), BR #2 (Granite), and unknown (Sweetie). DD's 3 favorite

SLW - Poppy

I looked up the hatchery these guys came from.
Choices for barred chickens: BR, Barred, Barred Leghorn (hadn't heard of this variety before), California Grey, and cuckoo maran
Choices for chipmunks: SS, LBL, Dark Cornish, golden lakenvelder, and silver leghorn

Off I go to pour over pictures

I only sold for $5 each so maybe that's why I got so many offers. But I had no idea if they even would sell here so I thought 5 was fine. If I sell 2 more I will do $10 each and after that maybe $15 and see what happens.

Dopey me.... I should have asked. I'm sure I could have gotten 10 easily. Next time I'll bump it up.

Soooo cute!! I'm thinking 25 is a nice round number but 30 is pretty good too

What hatchery did they come from? California Grey sound awesome... I looked at those in the past. Big white eggs and not a flighty breed! Can't wait till you figure it out.

Next year it will be 30 for sure since I want to keep 1 of each of the OE mixes to laying age to figure out which combo produces the best result. ;)
They came from Privett. It's definitely a hatchery that caters to feed stores since they charge a small order fee for less than 120 chickens!

After looking at pictures I think she is a single comb gold laced wyandotte. It's really the only thing she looks like. I thought that right away when I saw her but the single comb threw me. After doing a little reading I see it's pretty common especially in hatchery birds to get a single combed wyandotte. So now we have a slw, glw, and blrw. :)
