Coronations are stunning! We have a breeder near us who breeds them as well as the Light Sussex. She just sold her Speckled and Silver Sussex project pairs to another breeder. But this coming spring I think we are just going with Meyer.

Our girls didn't want to come out of the coop either this morning, because of the snow, the cold isn't nearly as bad here. I had to trick them with treats and even then they were apprehensive, see pics below.

Oh no, sorry you are feeling sick, take your time and don't worry about it. Rest, hydrate and hope you feel better soon!

Good luck with the Marans. Just fyi it's the Black Copper that tend to lay the darkest but the others should give you lovely variations of dark and some with speckles :)

Welcome back, good to hear! How do they do with the CoopTight? Looking forward to pics!

So it started snowing yesterday, just little flurries, girls didn't mind. It picked up in the evening and started to stick a bit before their bedtime but they didn't turn in any earlier, I think it was actually a little later because it seemed lighter out because of the snow. But it kept snowing through the night and we had a decent blanket by morning. I was curious to see their reaction to the white stuff on the ground. They did not care for it and did not want to come out. A couple of them ate the snow off the edge of their door step but didn't venture on to the ramp. So I waited until the boy was dressed and fed and bundled up then we both went out together with a bag of scratch/meal worms/boss to lure them out.

We see the treats but the white stuff is to much

Clockwise from top: Clara the EE, Morgaine the Marans, Amelia the Golden Buff, Baby the Buff Orp and Victoria the Dorking

And now to go back outside and see if there are any eggs yet today.

Funny pics. I let my friends chickens out this morning and the door on their side is too small for more than one chicken at a time. The first one pops it's head out and stops staring at the snow. She sat their long enough I could see beaks pushing her from the back like, "move out of the way!". Eventually she turned around and went back into the coop. The next one comes rushing to the door and stops short also. None of them came out before I left. The funny thing is they have a large area in their run that was already back to dirt where my gang only had snow and they were all running around.
They are all out now.

yes see I got ahead of myself, I really want chocolate colored eggs to add depth to our eggs. I will need to find out if they have any BCM up the street, love all your pics of the girls and their big adventure outside the coop. You also have good commentary! I love the color of your eggs, nice color varity.

Speaking of speckled eggs, here is a shot of one from yesterday, have no idea who laid it.

Got this egg yesterday, very pale blue almost white looking in certain light, see pics below.

Funny how much more blue it looks with the wood background, it came from Beyone, one of our EE.

I love the speckles. And yes, the wood really brings out the blue.

Too cute! Victoria is my husband's chicken, he would frown upon me kissing her, which is why I texted him that pic :)

Oh, no big deal! It's just whatever disease my niece has brought home from kindergarten this week. I apparently meant to look for those pictures earlier, but... Anyway, better late than never! This is a Speckled Sussex egg (from miss Iddy Biddy, hence why it's iddy biddy :D Poggy's eggs are a bit bigger and less round, but about the same color.) :

And the two Partridge Rocks' eggs, side by side (don't mind the blood, it was Fancy's first egg... It's the only picture I have of both of their eggs.)

So I guess I was a bit off on their colors when I was trying to describe them. Oh, well.

Our PR egg is in the 10-11 o'clock position.

For those that are curious: clockwise starting at 12... Welsummer, BA, BR, SLP, EE, Cochin, PR, and in the middle D'Uccle. Once the girls start laying again I'll have to take an updated pic.

Thank you :)  Love the speckled egg!  Irregularities are so fun!
I agree, I am amazed of the variety each chicken can lay...big, small, speckled or not, light or dark, round or more oval, etc....

funny how they acclimate, glad your helping out your friend and her flock, hope she is appreciative.

Today spent time before the next snow (is was sunny and mid 30's) which is predicted to start tonight and go through tomorrow night, another 6-8 inches. Got more straw, put some down in the run and refreshed the coop bedding and making it more deep. Going for the deep litter method through the winter. Also added more to the nest boxes in both coops and I tried to tarp the run in strategic places for wind breaks and having cover overhead. Once that was done, I tossed into the run a bunch of greens, grapes (the gang goes crazy for grapes!) and some flock block. The gang was appreciative of the changes and spent a couple hours out in the run, scratching and pecking away. Love hearing the sweet cooing sounds once they had some ground cover in the run and got some sunshine. Here are some shots of the work, have a few other things I would like to do to button up everything.

Decided to leave the south west side of the run un-tarped as that is where they get good afternoon sun and it is where the most popular roosts are....the last pic is my work in progress....so ended up tarpping the north and east side of run as that is where we get bone chiling winds from.

It was a balmy 14 in the coop at night fall and the highest the humidity has gotten has been 28. Hoping to be done with the winterzing part of chicken keeping. Nothing like waiting to the last minute.

Love the before ena after shots of the chicks turning into hens. Wish I had some more baby shots, will make sure get some when we hatch. Speaking if hatching, so some might know I am on the quest for choclate brown eggs. My neighbor up the street has a flock of about 50 birds and he had Marans. Today I asked him about which type and he said BCM! His partner had told me Cuckoo, so I am hopeful to be hatching out some BCM in the spring.

I don't know where in co you are but I should have some bcm eggs in the spring too. I have a blue copper rooster and a black copper hen. She's not laying yet but I'll post a pic when she starts. I can't wait to see how dark her eggs are.

We are in North Boulder and that would be great, thanks for offering that to us. If you would like any in exchange to hatch, let me know. I am hoping with the BO Roos mating with the EE that we will get some OE. Our BO's will mate with the following breeds of hens: Dark Cornish, RIR, Welsummer, Barred Rock, Delaware and EE. I was researching Maran some yesterday and am smitten with the BCM and Blue, so pretty and unique. Can't wait to see how your eggs look, hope they are dark.

Ok so was out in the snow this am tarpping the roof. I came to the conclusion that we maybe stuck in winter now and felt it wasn't realistic to think we were going to be able to get the outdoor panels up on the roof of the run. I didn't want to not have any cover on the run as it will just keep snowing in there. The gang really enjoyed having a bunch of straw to walk around on and be off the snow, while outside. I also was concerned about all 23 in the coop so much, didn't want to see any pecking starting. Got the tarp secure and the gang has been outside for most the morning, with breaks inside the balmy coop at 13. Humidity is staying low and no ammonia smells so I think the deep litter method is already starting to work. Just sprinkle some DE on the poop in the am, then turn it and I add more straw every few days, not a lot. The gang spends some time turning their bedding in the coop as well.

Got a good shot of one of our RIR in the nest box yesterday after she laid.....so of course I had my iPhone

I am making these collages as I come across the girls eggs right after laying. These are added to my Pinterest page and eventually our website. That way if the people we donate too or sell eggs to want can have a connection to their food source. I did another one but won't keep clogging the thread with those....
