Meyer Hatchery questions

Hi, I am planning on ordering 25 chicks from Meyer's "Production Pack" hoping they will be good layers. has any one here ever ordered that pack? Do they lay as good as they say? are they decent looking? if you have ordered from Meyer I would love to see pics of them.

I am getting them for eggs and need to know how well meyer's strains lay.

Never ordered the production pack but 2 years ago I ordered a mix of layer breeds, mostly EEs, Dominiques, etc. Anyway, they all turned out great and last year I had an abundance of eggs all winter. Most of them molted this year so egg production has been slower, but one of the EEs just started laying again, even with the short days. I think you will be happy with your girls. I already placed an order to get some more girls from them next Spring

I haven't gotten any layers from them, but I did order the surplus broiler package (Cornish X) from them a couple of months ago. To be honest, I was not at all happy with them. Five of 27 birds died, they were either DOA or died within about twelve hours of arrival. Plus the hatchery did not notify me of shipment, so I did not have the brooder ready and really had to scramble to get them set up. These don't seem to be growing as well as the ones of the same breed I got from McMurray's in previous years as well.

Thank you for your reply..could [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]have just been rough shipping the reason they were dead..or maybe they went through cold or hot weather on the way to you...so many reasons why you could lose some shipped chicks.[/FONT]

I have had good luck with Meyer the past 2 years. I got an assortment of many different breeds in April 2011, and then a few more breeds that I had learned about in spring 2012. All of my chicks from both groups lived as well as the extra chick. Hatchery chickens are almost always good layers, and Meyer gives you a shipping date within 1-2 days of delivery when your order is placed. I have been well satisfied. They are located in Ohio so for me it was one of the closest places to order from so that my chicks would only be shipped a short distance and less stressed.

Thank you...We will be ordering the first shipment of the year which will be Feb. 19th on the "Production Pack" I just hope they will ship ok in the cooler weather...I have heard that is cold weather Meyer will add a heat pack in for the chicks.

I got a shipment of 4 day-olds in June. One arrived dead in the box, but our post office held the box a day longer than it should have, so that could have been the cause.
