ok, so I was browsing through hatchery websites and stumbled on the fact that mypetchicken.com and meyerhatchery.com has pretty much all the same breeds, all the same prices, and even use some of the same photos for their chickens. Is this a coincidence or is mypetchicken another online storefront for meyerhatchery?

They seem like a partnership business. MPC is a middle man providing customer ordering chicks but without the need to order large quantity like most hatcheries. And Meyers act as a main source to supply MPC with available chicks.

MPC shares warehouse space with Meyers. That's what I was told by them. I do believe they have the same stock.

MPC used to be the only place that sold small orders, so when they started it was a new thing. Other hatcheries followed suit, including Meyers.

MPC does broker the waterfowl, which ships out of California. So they are both a hatchery, and a broker.

Thanks, all, for the replies. It seems strange that MPC seems to be the only place to offer sexed bantams if they were just a broker. There seems to be more to it.

I asked about it and their customer service (which is wonderful btw) said that they didn't know why other hatcheries hadn't picked up the custom, but it was possibly because other hatcheries mainly cater to large orders for people in the countryside, as opposed to small orders for urban settings where roos are illegal.

Hatcheries don't sex bantams because of their size. Their smaller size makes it more difficult and dangerous for the chicks.
Then there's the bonus of not having so many unwanted males like they do with large fowl.

Because they charge a pretty high fee to do so.
That fee offsets any chicks they damage in the process and the little extra time it takes to do so.
Plus if they get it wrong those fees cover the refunds.
