Mice in my coop!

Hi. I use the sticky board traps. They are on amazon and are cheap. I've tried several methods and the nasty critters just kept reproducing. I have them in my peacock pen and my grain shack. My mouse population has dropped tremendously! They are called catchmaster 606 MC on amazon for around 7.00. Reusable and I get mice sometimes 4 at a time in these traps. They are amazing. I swear by them. Hope this helps.

@Chercher72 Curious, how do you re-use these...meaning what do you do with the live mouse stuck to trap?

Just through the mouse away in the garbage, or you could kill it first of you don't want it to suffer. You can't reuse glue traps because the mice let out an alarm idea that will warn other nice away from that specific glue trap.

I vote you get cats! They don't have to be indoor cats, they don't even have to be tame! Just get a couple of fixed strays from an animal shelter and let them run around your house, if you live in the country you don't even have to feed them. We use to have mice problems until we got a pair of cats a couple of years ago, and I have only seen one live mouse since!

We don't have cats but once in awhile I see some on my game cameras. I caught a couple in my live traps I think were feral. They acted like they wanted to kill me when I released them but did run off. Here is my story of the coop that was infested with rats. The parts I tore out had rat nests in them including the ceiling. I don't know why we built this coop with inside walls but we did and the rats built nests in-between the studs in the wall cavities. The wood around the bottom of the coop started rotting out mostly on the outside of the coop and that is where the rat nests were. From the inside of the coop they hadn't breached the wall on the inside of the studs. They gnawed holes through the outside wall. At first I put baits only in the rat bait boxes in our barn behind the coops. I had put out a couple of spring traps and did catch some. I put a some more rat bait boxes in the garage and a couple of sheds. I did at first come across a couple of rats in the dying stage and put them out and disposed of them and once found a couple down by the barn which I also disposed of. Other than that found no dead rats. I suspect they went into their tunnels and died. I found no dead animals around from second hand poisoning. If they did get any dead rats they may have survived. I found out that possums are immune to rat poison. Some chunks of rat baits in the barn kept coming up missing so I put a camera down there.

I was asking @Chercher72....
(see how I quoted their post?)
.... because they said they re-use them.

Sorry, yes I noticed, just wanted to tell what I thought. What do you do, @Chercher72?

Have the empathy to kill the mouse off the trap or its incredible animal cruelty and several days of agony.

Mice suffer the same as dogs or people.
Yes, I agree, but my family members always got to the traps before me.

Been ranching for 20 years here. Goats and chickens live together in the barn. Closed up at night. Guess what I saw 2 weeks ago? 2 rats!!! Freaked and creeped me out! Never had this problem. Have been using rat traps bought on Amazon and green rectangular rat bait poison. For 2 weeks I have been getting 2 rats a say in traps of all sizes and found a couple just about dead that I put out of their misery. Will not use glue traps. Not humane in my eyes. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of so many when we never had trouble before. It's fall here in CT and I guess they are looking for a spot to winter over, but not here!!! I bait the traps under a milk crate so the hens can't get snapped by error. This is disgusting. Feed is in galvanized cans. Feeders put away at night. Rock dust dug around barn 6 inches down and they just move it out of the way to tunnel like nothing was there. This has got to stop.

We use electronic traps that seem like one of the more humane ways to eliminate them. There are several different sizes and types but found that the ones that can collect several before having to empty were troublesome. They are expensive but will last years if you take care of them.

This is what worked for me. I had an infested coop that I renovated. I put baited rat bait boxes in the infested coop, after moving the birds to another coop and pen, as well as our barn behind the coops. The green baits that came with the bait boxes didn't work very well. I switched baits and after monitoring them for awhile and re-baiting as needed I gradually re-baited less and less. I did find a couple of dead rats and one on it's way out that I put out of my misery. I had noticed tunnels near the coops. I'm pretty sure the rats when down into their tunnels and died or I should have found a lot of dead rats and I didn't. At first I tried traps but had way too many rats of all sizes that came out of the coop when I started renovating it. The only critters that can get to the bait is rats and mice. There is a little window above the bait so it can be checked often.
