Hope to start a hatch of my light brahma mixes, some EE's and Welsummers from a friend end of next week.

I wish I could find eggs I was looking for nearby! I've been in search of marans eggs, because I really want to make some olive Eggers with my Ameraucaunas, but I can never find marans close. Hatcheries don't have them as dark as I want and everyone else costs an arm and a leg or are too far away. So I think I'll stick with my bantam silkies and Ameraucaunas for now. I'll be selling babies and possibly hatching eggs pretty soon after they start laying. only to people close by of course, I don't want to get into shipping until I get my feet in the water a bit more.

I just had one of two eggs hatch out. They are Barred rock/white laced red cornish.

You'll have to post pictures when they're all feathered out, I bet they'll be beautiful!

Hey all, sorry for the kind of cross post for those of you that might be subscribed to the Michiganders thread. But I am in a bit of a scramble here. Anyone here happen to be from the Jackson area and have kids in the Jackson 4-H program? We are wanting to show chickens this year at the fair. I was looking over the rules and regulations for breeders and its says we must have chicks in our possession by March 1st. Well our chicken leader hasn't even had a meeting yet this year! So now I feel like I'm scrambling to find chicks in time. We were planning to build our own incubator (I've already ordered the parts for it on ebay) and now to find out we won't have time to incubate them for the fair. Grrr. So can anyone shed some light on, Am I reading this is right And B) if I am, anyone have chicks that are NPIP certified for sale in or around the Jackson area, or can recommend a place? We want bantam. As far as the breed, we still haven't picked out everything we wanted. We wanted different/unusual birds, such as silkies, frizzles etc. But beyond that we haven't settled on exact breeds. More importantly, we need breeds that are docile for showing. This is just for breeder/showmanship chickens. The meat chickens we have to order directly thru the extension office, so we are ok there. Gah, I hate having to rush around at the last minute. I just thought I'd post here, in case anyone is hatching out extra chicks.

Me too...... wants Marans and real Ameraucana...but no one nearby has them or they cost tooooo much.

Oh Well...will have to be satisfied with what I can get, trying out these green and dark brown(from EE and supposedly Welsummer covered by an EE roo) and a few of my own for hatching, but with the cold not sure the eggs will even be viable. If they are not viable will grab some EE and Welsummer from the local mill when they come in.

It's my first year with chooks so still a lot to learn, more runs to build, maybe next year.

There is a man in the Muskegon area that sells marans and ameraucanas (splash wheaton I believe) and a few other breeds on CL in the spring and most of the summer. I have no idea about egg color, but know that some on the MI thread have gotten birds from him in the past and say he is a nice guy (though don't expect to get to walk around and check things out as he takes bio-security seriously).

As far as marans go, check with Wynette. I am getting a cockerel from her later this spring for an olive egger project, and she sells her cull hens (not up to her breeding program standard, but will lay a very nice egg) when she has them.

I'm getting Ameraucaunas from a guy in birch run this spring. I had to order them back in November, he sells out really fast! I wish I loved closer to Muskegon, maybe I'll take a road trip.

Yes, I've talked to Wynette about hatching eggs, and someone much closer with BCM.......
.....but realistically I just can't afford to buy them or even the gas to drive far for freebies, if they even existed.

My BCM dream will have to remain just that for now...it's dream and I will whine about it once in a while.

Having a great hatch.. 18 eggs in at lockdown, 14 hatched, 1 pip, and 3 nothing yet.. started day 22 at 2pm today.. so still have time..
wanted to wait till i had more hatched b4 posting pictures..
