Michigan Hatchers! What'cha got cookin?

23 eggs set in incubator....only 5 for sure didn't get too cold and are most probably fertile....the rest are a crap shoot regarding both freezing and fertility.
A lot of them won't be easy to candle for development....hope there's no exploding stinkers in there!

Did a day 7 candling tonite, could 'see' more than my first hatch at day 7.
Saw a lot of veining, a few 'blobs' and in one even movement!
Was very glad to see that most of the blue eggs were pretty easy to see into.
I was pleasantly surprised too see so much veining, thought the cold was going to stump us.
Definitely feeling encouraged!

Day 10 candling last night ...10 for sure are developing and moving, 5 look to be clears....the rest I just couldn't see, blue eggs where I saw veining before seem impenetrable now, but I have a rotten 'candler' rigged up, last hatch planned in a borrowed bator so spending much time and any money on a better candler is moot.

So I'll just have to wait and see what pops out! At least I'm pretty certain I'll get a few chicks anyway. Am very surprised that the Light Brahma mutt eggs that were 14 days old when I set them are all showing movement...will be curious to see what they look like as now they are Light Brahma mutts crossed with Dark Brahma mutt roo.

I did day 11 candeling today. Missed last night had the stomach flu. I can not believe the difference between shipped eggs and unshipped eggs. The unshipped have much better veining and definition than the shipped ever did. And the wigglers seem so much more energetic. Amazing to me. And I was bad and bought another incubator. I just get the styro farmers innovators but they work for me.

I think the same! I noticed too they really move around a lot!

anyone local interested in trying their hand at a batch of my BLCM. eggs?? Ive got about 14 here. Would like to compare my hatching results with someone else who has a bit more experience

Black copper tend to be doficult to hatch some say it has to do with the thickness of the coloring covering thw pores so i have done both the light sanding off the coloring and the dry hatch method still have mixed feling about both but i do think you need to run on the dry side with marans which is odd bexuse their origins wer in marshy wetland regions.

Should I candle at day 7 (tomorrow!!!) or day 10? I am anxious but want to do what is best for the eggs and potential chicks...

Do both. I candle a lot...like day 7, 10, 14, 18. I like to see the development in them.

I try to handle shipped eggs as little as possible......they've already gone through lots of jostling, and I'd like to think that the LESS I mess with them, the better chance they have.  PLUS, I've usually paid a decent amount of $$ for them. Now my OWN flock's eggs are a different story. I LOVE candling. It's really fun to see the change in the eggs in just 3 short weeks.



Bottom line, the more you leave them alone and keep out of the incubator the better off you are (because then you can't accidentally DROP a developing egg and kill a chick.....BEEN THERE)



If you DO candle, DO NOT HOLD THE EGG YOU ARE LOOKING AT OVER THE OTHERS IN THE INCUBATOR. if you drop it, it'll land on the OTHER eggs and you could have lots of broken eggs. And let me tell ya.....when it's day 15, and you drop your only developing lavender orpington egg that came all the way from California on the floor because you just HAD to see what was going on, you feel like a big meanie.

...lol...not to mention massively ****** and disappointed!!!

About the second egg I ever candled I dropped from about shoulder height to the concrete floor....thank goodness it was infertile as it was someone else's, but man what a mess to clean up.
