Michigan Hatchers! What'cha got cookin?

Well I have made a FIRM decision today. I have a mutt hen that lays a green egg almost every single gosh darn day. She molted this fall, took about 3 or 4 weeks off laying while she did that, and has been right back at it all winter.....5+ eggs a week even through the frigid temps. I am hatching a TON of her eggs this year. I'll start with her under the blue wyandotte roo i have, and once I get another roo picked up from wynette, I'm going to put her under that roo for hopefully olive eggers! She is SO reliable. Hopefully she doesn't decide to go broody this year.....2 of her hatch-mates were killer broodies that I sold off last year.

I'm counting down the days until vacation, and then I'll be counting down the days until I get back because then I can set eggs!!!

I have Tolbunt Polish and Jubilee Orpington hatching eggs is anyone wants to try them! Beautiful birds!

I have two mutt hens that are the same way - bantam mixes, one lays blue eggs and one lays brown. Funky looking birds but dependable. Might cross them with my silver roo...hmm. So many options!!!

sorry i have been mia for awhile busy with kids and school activities, I put 18 eggs in lockdown last night.. this is my second hatch this year.. had 2 temp spikes to 105 not sure if this affected the eggs. so have that in the back of my mind now.. we candled every egg that we put in lockdown and look good, but never know untill they are hatched.


Glad sounds like you have a great laying hen there. i am curious are the pullets that you got from her good layers,

So I thought about somethin today...

Im nutz!

I ran 3 heat lamps now for 3 months and just realized thats $90 a month!
Darn spoiled chickens!


Also my last 3 eggs started peepin today! These are chocholate english bantam orphingtons! Crossin my fingers that they are gonna be girls!

what size bulb are you using, thats high electric bill.. i use a 60w.. in my brooder. and christmas lights in the coop.. havent really checked the bill.. maybe i dont want to lol

But thats probably y I get a doz - 2 doz eggs a day vrs most chicken owners...

My bill is up, too - the incubator, the brooder, the heated water dish for the adult chickens, the heated water trough for the horses, and six heated water buckets for the horses. Funny thing is I get Consumer's rating and we are still "below average" - can't imagine what other uses people have for electric.
