Hi crystal
I am also from Grand Rapids and wondering if you know the laws for chickens here? I am getting no phone calls returned, no answers when searching , nothing! I also tried your link to Facebook for egg swap etc but it brings me to my news feed?

Personally, I would never ask the code enforcement people what the law is. They have nothing pushing them to be honest about it, or to not give you their interpretation of it. I would ALWAYS look for the ordinances online first. More and more municipalities have them online. It seems like most do these days. At least you can find out what you are truly up against, language wise, before you talk to anyone official.

Farm animal also means any other Animal, raised for commercial profit, slaughter, or more than 2 breeder rabbits.

We are not Cities here. A multiple townships within a County. But I am not in a city. I have found out SINCE I have been raising/breeding for standard that there are MANY in just MY small township that have chickens. But none that have my Heritage RIR.

One friend of mine living closer to 'town' went and asked ..... he was told as long as no neighbor complains he can have what he wants. Our towship isn't even zoned and only 40 acres behind or down hill is State land.

Only six properties with two being seasonal. My neighbor doesn't care and gets eggs from me so no worries there. When I was seasonal (after I graduated up here then moved) she tried chickens and they were all over my place too. I am the bottom of the first forty.... her family members own the rest. The next is 40 acres down toward state with only 1 other full timer (seasonal between us and below them).

I know none of my close neighbors care a bit. Only stipulation I got from my friend of years was I train them to stay out of her yard proper so no garden damage occurs or their dogs get after my chickens. She even calls me if she sees a hawk in the area. She worries more than I do I guess. Her coop was an old building on her place when she moved into it and it has no floor or protective digging barrier. She had lots of casualties. I've only lost two since I have had them... one hawk and one unknown before the coop was completed.
