. We had to put a tarp on our coop because the bedding was soaked from all the rain ugh!!!!

I am usually a very reasonable and logical person.  It has been an incredibly stressful week.  I took the kids to Family Farm and Home to look for some seeds.  They had bantam cochin chicks.  We left with 2.
Now.
I live in the city and we have 2 hens and 3 chicks who are 8 weeks old.  Chicken math is funny, but I have some serious buyers remorse.  Look for my family at Chickenstock.  We'll have at least 2 birds to offer for interested folks.

:smack to myself.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Those fuzzy faces are impossible to resist ;)

Beautiful babies!!! Help me out. CCL stands for?

Cream Crested Legbar. I didn't know, either. And once I looked it up, then I had to look up Legbar. As suspected, that's for a variety that originated as a cross between a Leghorn (brown Leghorn) and a Barred Rock. With some Ameraucana thrown in, for blue egg color. I thought this was something new, but they actually were developed in the UK in the 1930s. They are autosexing, which is rare, in that you can tell males from females at birth by coloration of feathering. (As you can see, I got quite interested. They are gorgeous. I am telling myself no, you are not going to get all excited about another rare chicken breed and go looking for hatching eggs!)

Great results on the hatch TDHenson.

So what is the auto sexing trait in the CCL? Is it the chipmunk stripes are girls? Sorry, kinda the best I can see number wise in the photo...

Thanks!

Raz, Someone REALLY does not want chickens in your area, ...we may have to have a fundraiser to help you pay all your fines. course you could pay $! a week for the next ???yrs

what sweet hens,,

Tee, glad the tree didn't fall on your house,

thanks Glad, that was my thought also, ....If I get another broody, I will save eggs soon, It has been about 10 days but I don't think my old rooster is very potent any more
I broke my NH by putting her in the small coop with the young rooster,

Snow on the ground again, and not supposed to rise above freezing (sigh). Sad that temps in the 40's seem warm!

They actually used Araucanas in CCL development. They are autosexing, and lay a nice big blue egg. There is a lot of work top be done to set type and egg color - check out the Cream Legbar and the Legbar Thread! if you are interested, lots of good info on them.

Beautiful winter I mean spring morning in southern Michigan. Sun is shining nicely off the snow-covered lawn and vehicles.....

Of course it snowed, DH's uncle is driving his tractor over this morning (approx 15 miles) to plow one of the garden plots. He was going to do both, but I have been really leaning toward raised beds and made the final decision that was how we were going to go. Hope it warms up some, my yard is littered with sticks and branches. I am anticipating an aching back by the end of the day!.

Got to get at it! Hope everyone has a chance to enjoy some sunshine!
