Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

And I don't think I ever updated, but it seems now that my Khaki Campbell, whose hatch was just last week, seems to have adopted the Runners, so I guess duck moms are sort of fickle! I think if you're going to do it, you just have to really watch how things go.

I recommend that eggs be candled on day 10 then again on day 18. You shouldn't open the incubator anymore than is necessary. Candling at day 15 just adds one more opening event.

Personally I've never know of hen accepting chicks more than a few days old.

Hope to see a bunch of you tomorrow at Fowl Fest! :) I'll be there with my husband and kids. Look for the sign that says Tice Farm Silkie and say hello! I'll also be handing out BYC cards! :)

I wrote out my story of how I became a chicken outlaw. I tried to be objective but I'm not sure that I was successful.

Someone was kind enough to post the contact info for the Garden City mayor, council, state senator and rep on that site. I wrote to all of them and urge everyone else to do so as well.
Hi everyone,

I am new to chickens and fairly new to Michigan. I use to live in the UP in Hancock for a year until the CG moved me to NJ for a few years. Now I am back in Michigan as of last august in Grand Haven/Robinson Township. Hope you guys don't mind me joining the Michigan thread since Michigan is the environment my chicks are growing up in and where we are suppose to be living for at least the next couple of years. I have four chicks: two Easter Eggers and two barred rocks (one I may suspect is actually a Roo). Here is a picture of my five week old backyard flock.

Welcome, your chicks are cuties.
Been sick. In Hospital since April 7. Multiple system failure following rotator cuff, shoulder joint replacement. Supposed to be on the mend now. Came home yesterday. My healing was nothing short of a miracle According to hospital staff. Good to be back. Not feeling so well though. Spent 11 days in ICU/CCU. 11 more in Phys. and Occ. Therapy of hosp. Wish me luck. Bob.
I wish you great health as well as luck. It sounds like you are due for both. I hope you feel much better soon.
Can anyone give me the good/bad/ugly on Button Quail. I am thinking of getting some; wondering if anyone will be bringing some to Chickenstock. Need to start small; can't have any "poultry" in Shelby Township (well, maybe....but with what RaZ is going through....I'm going to steer well clear of that right now). So...I thought Button Quail might be okay. How big of a space (pen, cage, coop, whatever) do I need?
How many should I start with? Don't want males...just females for the eggs. Are they good layers?

If anyone has info, please share!
Button quail are cute and fun. They come in so many different colors. They can't take our Michigan winters so you'll have to have someplace inside for them. The ones I had were good layers of tiny eggs. They say you can keep pairs/trios in small quarters but they can be aggressive so I tried to give them more room and stuff to hide in and play with.
I would drive all the way to the court on a $50 tank of gas to deliver that one dollar, just to stick it to 'em.

Me too. And, as everybody says, in loose pennies.
That would be freaking awesome. Especially if it was all in one day and got the press in for that. That'd show the support he's got and then some.

e In just under two hours the sun will rise and another day will be underway and it appears that it will be a good one for working in the garden. Temperature should be just under 70 for most of the day and while the sky is supposed to be cloudy no rain is in the forecast. Actually today would have been a better day for fishing than yesterday.

Yesterday I was on the river before 7 and we immediately hooked and landed our first and only walleye. It was long before the sun was in full force and it was much to bright for light sensitive fish like walleye and steelhead. We did however catch and release one small mouth bass after another and all of them were between 3 and 4 pounds. I hazard to guess how many we would have caught had we been using lures designed for bass.

While the water level had dropped, you could see where it had been 6' higher, it was still high enough that it could have been easy to find yourself in trouble with log jams and eddys. While my current boat is quite safe, it narrow width and low freeboard requires due diligence. With almost 4' more water under the keel than on my last excursion, it was nice to not have the motor's skeg bouncing off sunken logs or rocks.

My flock continues to given me a dozen or more eggs each day and I have been selling the excess. I have a sign that states that feed prices have gotten quite expensive and everyone should leave what they feel is a fair amount. That has worked out quite well with people leaving anywhere from $2 to $5 per dozen. Thursday, as I mowed the lawn, I observed an extremely well dress individual driving a very expensive car reading the sign that states that my cost is close to $2 per dozen. After he took a dozen and left I checked and found he though 50 cents was a fair contribution.

one of the extra benefits to owning chickens is having to get up early and let them out, you get to see BEAUTIFUL sun rises like todays

Opa, that does not surprise me, sad...........you could always go fishing again today

Rjen maybe you should put up a jar with a sign "help keep the Garden City chicken criminal out of jail" maybe have a short version of Raz's story printed up, something simple like, G.C. resident charged with the CRIME of chickens keeping jail time, fine, and probation.

people with OCDC have a hard time with mess. I am fortunate to not be married to such a person, if I am working outside my house is a BIG mess as well as the yard cause I can't keep the house clean if I am working outside. Out side I have 3 projects going at once. I had to take a day this week to put away all the projects inside I have going ,so I didn't feel to bad about starting 3 more outside I think I have attention disorder.MUST STAY FOCUSED!!!, (never gonna happen)
