Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Silly, this is EXACTLY what we've been looking for, for our goats! That is just too far away to drive with our available time is so limited. Nice find, you should get it for your goats.

I would if I had the time.. we're in the middle of putting up a building for the goats..so I doubt DH will want to haul something like this around.

SO TIRED!

I just popped in here & it took a while to read up all the posts. I wish I had more time to comment on all the posts, but at least I can give an update from my neck of the woods.

DH has been redoing the shingles on our roof this weekend. Way too much fun - Not! We have a large roof (nearly 30 square)... We'd be lucky if it were half done. We have a steep peak in the front that is "naked" right now, but tarped for the rain. Hoping to get that done soon. Still need to do the peak, above the garage, & above the porch... DH has been working on the roof since Friday & is so sore all over. He didn't sleep last night at all & is now off to work a 10 shift. Yikes.

We had a big crew out again yesterday... I did a lot of cooking for Saturday's crew, but yesterday DH wanted a "bucket of chicken" from town to feed the guys. So we spent about $100 at KFC... and came home with undercooked chicken! Which of course we noticed AFTER everybody had eaten. GRR. Not happy about that. I already called them and left a lovely message on their machine, and I emailed the corporate office with a picture of the gross chicken (there were 2 small buckets leftover and they were all undercooked). I'm sure I won't hear back from them.

Speaking of eating chicken... My daughter got her meat birds for 4H last week. 12 little cornish cross chicks. They're cute... but I'm so tired of raising chicks. We've been doing it since January. Glad DD is taking care of these ones. I hope she does well & will show 2 of them at the fair this fall.

Our goats got out of their portable pen yesterday. We're all up in the front yard working, and here come 3 little goats mowing the lawn and grazing all the way to the dumpster (for shingles). What in the world?! EEK. So we haul the little buggers all the way to the back field & back into their pen. It wasn't wired very well apparently, but that's all fixed now. Upon inspection... THEY ATE MY GARDEN! Ugh. Luckily they left the sunflowers and corn alone. But they managed to take out the brussel sprouts, cabbages, & broccoli plants. :( They were doing so well too! The plants were nice & big & healthy... now their roots & stump. We'll have to replant a major part of the garden. All that work.

Since our roof project is taking up so much time... I'm not sure if we'll actually get to come to Chickenstock! Very frustrating. We can only work on the roof when it's not raining, & when we're not working at our jobs. I really need to sell off my overstock of silkie chicks (& looking forward to getting some BCM's). And I HAVE to see everybody & chit chat & I really want to go. I have my "gift" all ready for the prize table. Keep your fingers crossed for us. It's still on our schedule of things to do, but hopefully the roof doesn't decide it needs to come first.

Lastly, our Rouen ducks are HUGE. I'm holding out hope that we actually have 1 male & 1 female. So far it looks that way. :) :)

my goats got out a while back.... didn't bother anything but my 30 yr old natural bonsi tree.... ate the whole thing.

Was able to check both roosters after dark; Buffy (BO) has an "issue" going on around his vent! maggots/dried blood and I presume a wound, although we really couldn't determine that at this point. Washed WELL and then applied 50/50 solution of water and peroxide...he's in the guest house in the garrage and resting comfortably....ANY thoughts/solutions on how to deal with this....my main concern is KILLING the maggots ASAP and then dealing with the poor guys wound.....NO NO idea what happened here! This was our main man and I really don't want to lose him! Thanks ALL!

Good Morning friends-

So, where's the coffee?

we missed you Mom. sorry for your troubles,

hope you can come to CS
Very well said Opa

do you have a pic of the PVC feeder?
Well, I'm off to paint
the elastic goes around the wings. put chicken in your lap head away from you, streatch elastic to one side and slip that wing in then gently stretch so it will go over the other wing, they work very well

sounds like you have a very big job, glad our roof isn't so big, or steep, Hope you get down in time for CS

Tap sounds like your puppy is a smart little guy!!

Was just thinking about you. So sorry about your chickens. I hope you do come to chickenstock.
Beautiful!! Glad you're enjoying the "wild" birds. Out of the seven chicks I got at TSC 2 are silver seabright roosters. Would anyone like them? I have too many roosters and need to get rid of them. Would be glad to meet you somewhere. They were hatched in March.
Good to "see" you again too. If anyone wants these and you can't come to chickenstock, I will be happy to transport them for you.
Mom, hope you do make it to CS. I'll have some FG's I'm bringing for folks that ordered them. I may have one extra if you want another. Laura, our Hummers are hitting the flowering bushes and feeders but I'm more interested in the orioles. Cindy takes care of the hummers, I put out the oranges.
We have an oriole nesting somewhere nearby. Like Opa said, they love the grape jelly.
Someone asked me what I'd want to come back as, well I'd come back as a CAT! Nobody would mess with me (except the most dangerous predator - MAN).

One of two I have, the other is a black male. At present they are nothing but trouble. This one thinks my expensive flyrod is a toy - no kitty. Anyway, as with any animal you choose to keep there are consequenses, responsibilities, and fun! Anyone that decides to get a cat should have it fixed as not to create ferals and unwanted offspring.
Adorable! I have always loved cats, still do.
Well, I'm off to paint the inside of the new coop area. DH plans on putting our Polish, Houdan, and silkies in there. He doesn't like that the polish and the houdan get picked on I think. I picked up our little banty chicken yesterday and noticed that she's getting quite bare on her back. She was a 'favorite' of the rooster I culled last week and I'm torn between putting one of the saddles that hillbilly hen sent me or just leaving her be. If I DO put it on one of the saddles on her, do I put the elastic loops around her WINGS or do they go down and put the loops around her LEGS?
Just like the others said. Usually easier to put them on after they have goneto roost. Then by morning they aren't as bothered by that strange thing on their back.
just re-posting in case it was missed, there is still time to put an order in if you want a custom named t-shirt for chicken stock!

*UPDATE: All orders have been shipped (except for the green one someone ordered)... so they're processing pretty quickly.
Me, I ordered the green one yesterday

Some pictures of my birds on this soggy day. The hens were so busy watching me (hoping I was coming to let them out for free-ranging or bringing treats) that they neglected the chick's door - usually heavily guarded. The young ones are quick to spill in and take advantage of the goods.

Then they noticed. A wyandotte took charge this time. Usually it's Souffle (BR in background, above photo).
Poor Pepper, who was not quick enough, got caught. She's fine though, slipped free. This is a regular occurrence.

Their freedom is short-lived. The wyandotte has them all back in their pen and is standing guard.
Sandy is coming to see what the fuss is about. She's friendly with the chicks and goes into their
pen sometimes to check it out, never causing a problem while there.

The pullets and cockerels The two cockerels in front I will probably bring to CS (BO/BR and BO/SLW).
Neither crow yet. My Wheaten Marans cockerel crows like a rusty hinge though.
About nine weeks old, the pair of them.

Another group shot. Midget turkey too. The older pullets are 12 weeks old now. Lemon,
is a BO/EE mix (background) and Poppy (in front of her), the Buff Brahma. The other pullet
is a BO/BR mix and isn't named yet. She's got beautiful patterning though.

Buff Brahma pullet. I love their deep, dark eyes.
