Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

A lady contacted me last night - she has 3 Pekins available. Free to a good home. Her dog is going after them so she thinks it's best that they go (she doesn't have a pond, a pen, or house for them). She is in the Flint/Swartz Creek area, I believe. She does not know the sexes. They are between 2 and 3 months old. She doesn't want them to be dinner and wants them to all go together. If anyone is interested, let me know. I can't take them as I am at full capacity here at my place.

Do you no the sex of the ducks? My one (left) duck just lost her friend to a raccoon this week and is lonely. Do you think the 3 would "buddy" up with my one duck

I remember news reports of the black bear near(ish) here. There was one that was in a chicken coop in Belmont. It left the hens alone, but gobbled up the watermelon.

When you consider the fact that most people get their Aracauna from a hatchery to start, and we all know they are clearly mis-labeled, you Aracauna breeders should campaign to get them labelled properly at hatcheries. However, not all hatcheries are mislabeling, but just don't breed to a rumpless tufted standard. Higher hatch rates that way.
I am working on getting the farm stores in my area to label correctly. Will talk the hatcheries later

we noticed that the "farm stores" & "pet-supply stores" that had chicks in the spring label them as aracauna or americaunas, rather than Easter Egger chicks - they told us that that is what the hatchery "label" them, so they just go by what they are told they are (although they really aren't the true purebred). i'm guessing the average person buying chicks from places like TSC, etc... aren't looking for pure breds, rather than having a few chickens to lay some eggs.
also, most people buying the EE chicks are probably more interested in the novelty of the colored eggs shell, rather than the concern of pure bred or proper breed identification

yeah I am sure still bugs me cause people seem to think that Aracaunas are what they bought where in truth You have to search forever for Aracaunas

The judge had the ruling before Mike was even called up. A written opinion was provided, but the judge gave a verbal recap. While the judge admitted that the Michigan Right to Farm Act supersedes local ordinance he opined that the intent of the law was meant solely for out-lying areas and not intended for farms in high density cities or for farms to move into those areas.

He went on to say that in order to be a commercial farm, one had to have the minimum of 50 animal units. To have less defines the operation as non-commercial and thus not entitled to RTFA protection. Furthermore, RTFA protects only against “nuisance” actions and here in Garden City, the violation is criminal.

The judge went even further to state that RTFA and GAAMPs were never intended to support small farm operations. RTFA was intended only for existing, commercial, large scale operations in rural areas. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has no standing in a city because of the words “agriculture” and “rural” in their title. And rural activities cannot take place in cities.

He closed by saying that the RTFA is a “matter of law and that law, the Right to Farm Act, does not supersede local city ordinance”.

So basically, Mike is now a chicken criminal just like me. He will be sentenced in a few weeks.

Wow ! what a bunch of "baloney" - & grossly mis-interpretation of the written laws
