It's time to cook for deer camp! We have to microwave everything in the trailer we all stay in (no propane to run the stove) so I have to do all of my meal planning ahead of time. I'm making chicken and dumplings, my brother is (hopefully) making chili, and my mom is cooking up a turkey breast for sandwiches. I'm also taking baked french toast and possibly pancakes to have as late-morning fare. Other that that it's PBJs and junk food!

I'm really excited about rifle season this year because I'm going to have 3 full days to dedicate to hunting. While I enjoy the thrill and challenge of using a bow more than a rifle, my opportunities to get in the woods once daylight savings comes along are limited to weekends, and THEN only if I don't have to work. Couple the 3 days with the very nice for our area deer we have on trail cameras and I'm being giddily optimistic about things.

Our little "special needs" chick passed away 2 days ago.....it was the one with the over grown top beak and very stunted growth. It happened the day after I moved the big wyandotte cockerel and 2 hens in with the group of pullets it was hatched with, so I'm guessing it got one too many pecks to the head or something.

When do I move in?

On the other hand, being a traveling hand could be fun. A different couch to sleep on every night. A different gourmet meal every day. I hear that TC serves her help fresh Dungeness crab and venison.

I can prioritize my travels based on the CS food list.
Hmm, well, sometimes the help get fed gruel, not fresh crab and venison, depending on how well they did

We lost a tree last night to the high winds. It has been dead awhile and is the favorite hang out for the hawks so I"m not sorry to see it go. It is beautiful today though.

I moved my chickens into their new coop and they won't stay yet. Last night about half were back at their original coop that is now empty. They didn't mind the wind at all and were out all day yesterday.

Did you get to keep the deer lady? Good luck to you hunters. I will not be hunting since my son is using my gun. I will however harvest if anyone is dumb enough to wander into the back field again. I can't carry my DH's gun for very long. I won't be around most of the day as I am in charge of a chili cook off/supper that our ladies group puts on. Both my DH and DS are doing pots for it. Half of the entries are teens which is kind of neat. We have a Traditional and Creative category and new this year a Challenge category. Think Iron Chef. They received a secret ingredient they have to use. A bottle of coke.

Nah, unfortunately, he didn't. That is, it's not that he wasn't allowed to or that it was mangled beyond salvage. It's just the way DH is. When he got home I asked him if he got it and he said the cops didn't ask him if he wanted it, which means that he was either afraid to ask or more likely, wouldn't have known what to do with it if they tagged it for him. Ah well. I gave him the scoop on what to do so maybe next time (and there will be a next time given how many deer we have in our area) he'll consider it. I've slaughtered chickens in the milk house; I'm not afraid to take a deer to the market, just need help loading and unloading it. It's a straight shot to the butchers, just down the road. Easy-peasy. I've never had the opportunity to eat venison, don't even know anyone who hunts. Would like to try someday. Not sure if my family would eat it or not. My youngest related last night that he felt really bad for the animals, because we kill them. So I had to explain the whole circle of life thing and how we humans threw a wrench in the gears when it comes to deer, forcing us to be stewards and play wolf to keep the numbers down. Then he felt bad that we shot all the wolves so I had to explain the livestock situation of the settlers. *sigh* He's gonna be my vegetarian, mark my words, not that there's anything wrong with that. I'd rather have a sensitive and empathetic child. He's such a sweetie.

I hear you Lady about your sensitive child and eating animals. Before I had chickens, I never thought twice about buying the package of chicken at the store. Now? I am much more thankful for the sacrifice these animals give to us. I ordered a grass fed beef quarter and never met the animal, but still say a prayer of thanks for the extra healthy meat we are now able to have. It makes me more appreciate the health benefits of eating the animals we raise or are purposely raised healthier than the mysterious life of the packaged meat in the grocery store.

Both of my sons felt the same way at one point of their young lives, but now are father's themselves and do not have the same feelings toward eating meat they did back then.

Of course, I did have the conversation with them that humans are not the top of the food chain no matter what "we" like to think. But we sure should be very concerned about where our food comes from these days and stay away from Lions that develop a "taste" for mankind
