Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I've been browsing the permies.com forum when I came across people talking about purchasing bare rooted tree saplings from their state's department of forestry. Does anyone know if Michigan does this, and where I can see what they offer?
Often your county extension office or conservation district will have bare root trees for sale in spring.
The results of transplanting these saplings is pretty iffy, based on my previous experience with getting bare-root saplings.

In my opinion, you are better off buying an established tree from a native nursery. I've had much better luck with transplanting an established young tree over the seedlings or saplings from an agency. (Your results may vary)

I have hundreds of 20' to 40' Blue Spruce that were purchased through the Soil Conservation District. I live in Washtenaw County and the SCD is located on Metty Drive in Ann Arbor. You would order them now for Spring planting. They come in bundled groups and the roots are bagged to protect them. You can use a hand tool similar to a potato spud planter to plant them..
The trees I helped plant when I was a kid we planted too close together, figuring many would die - They did well. Those trees are 1' - 2' apart and 30' to 40' tall now. When my DH and I built our house in 1986 we wanted a wind break so, we ordered 200 trees from SCD and all but 25 took. Those trees we planted 15' apart and staggered the 3 rows.
SCD sells other trees too for wind breaks but, you can not get trees from them and then sell them for Christmas Trees or landscaping - You can move them when they get bigger but, they must stay on your property.

Sam, my thoughts are with you. I know how an infection can be; had one myself 2 years ago and it was agonizing, and I had to have 2 surgeries. Hope you only have to have this one and that it heals up quickly.

Opa, take care, love and prayers for you,

I love to hear the success stories. Like I said before, your results may vary. Just keep trying.

Good luck tomorrow Opa. Hope you are feeling better when they're done. !

Good luck to all the hunters as well. Raz good luck with the " Buick"!
BTW I love to cook but unfortunately Dungeness Crab is out of my budget.

While everyone one is hunting ( or in surgery) I shall be trying to work on the girls' Fort Knox. Its getting there. But I'm sure I'll be working on it in the cold week ahead yet.

I too enjoy watching Neil Degrasse Tyson. He makes whatever he talks about Iinteresting and understandable even quantum physics.

Sam, good luck with your surgery tomorrow.. they are probably just going in for the instrument they left in ya.. and dont want to say anything.. heres to a speedy recovery and the infection goes away. sorry your missing opening day... keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Opa, hope things go well - please, please get better soon! I am sure Granny and Hope will care for you well, but if you need anything just ask.

Tap, my chef BIL uses coke in his BBQ recipe, I think you could do well with it in chili if you could balance the sweetness.
