Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Am I the first one up today? Well, good morning to y'all. :)

HH - adorable grandson!

I have no words of wisdom today (or really any day for that matter).

I am planning on moving the larger chicks outside this weekend. They're 7 weeks and time for them to go. We have to do some repairs to the fence between the grow out pen & the goat pasture first. The goats think it's great to rub against the chicken run fence & get a good scratching. Well, the fence doesn't appreciate it that much. LOL. We're going to replace all the wire, and then reinforce it with cattle panel. We have it that way between the large chicken run & goat pasture... just never set it up that way when we added the smaller pen. Lesson learned.

I'm thinking our goats would love a big wooden spool, or one of those outdoor wooden play-sets to climb all over. I've been looking through Craigslist occasionally for the last couple of years, but have never found "the awesome deal on that" for it. & by that I mean practically free. Ha! I did find a giant tractor tire that we could bury 1/2 way into the ground for them... but thought that sounded like too much work. We have some hard clay soil here & wouldn't be able to get the tractor inside the goat pasture.

Hi, HH good to hear from you. was just thinking about you, I think the New Hamp I got from you is the prettiest hen I have, she is such a pretty collar,

Beautiful grandson, congrats, I know you will enjoy him what's his name?
Thanks all for the wonderful comments on my grandson. I have waited a long time to be a grandparent and I am enjoying every moment. Yes, his name is Ethan and he weighed 9lbs 12 ozs when he was born. His poor mom was just miserable the last couple of weeks.

@snowflake The New Hampshires were my favorite ones. They were just so pretty, such good layers and mama's. And the rooster was very friendly and handsome too. I miss him most of all.

The day Ethan was born... He was born 27 years to the day after my husband and I met

That is a big baby and beautiful, of course. Mine were all in the 6 lbs. range so I can't even imagine. Congrats Grandma!

I do hope to bring some hand spun yarn to CS this year. Unfortunately, I don't have much new yarn since almost everything I've spun this winter was knit into clothing for either myself or my family. I hope to dye some of my existing natural wool colors to bring more appeal because people aren't really attracted to the natural stuff. They want their color and that stuff pretty much sold out last year between CS and the farmer's market. It would have to be natural dyes though. I do have standards.

Custard, my BO hen is broody again. She proved to be an excellent mommy last summer. It is so tempting to stick some eggs under her but I have enough hatches already. If anyone were, though, to have any breeds that I couldn't refuse... something I don't have yet... something practical and preferably dual purpose... good forager... pretty eggs...

More white during the night. At least last night it was just a dusting and should melt fast.

I just witnessed a wonderfully funny stand-off between a Red Tail Hawk and a Buzzard. No body movement but boy were their heads going. It ended with the Hawk leaving.

I would love to get some sort of indoor bird and then am reminded by DH that the button quail are in the house so they count. But they aren't the same, they don't want any human interaction.

I pop in now and then. I miss the friends I have made here but I had to get away from the computer for a while and prioritize things. I still miss my chickens but I have a wonderful new grandson to enjoy.
First congrats! That's why I called you the other day...miss ya's. And, remember what I said - plenty of room for the June trip!!! Cindy would love some company and so would I.

OK, not sure where you are.... but here you go... http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/for/4410053687.html I would love to pick up a few for my goats too..

What an adorable chunky baby HH! 9#12oz......I just can't even......WOW. I'm with Ladyr on that......7#ers MAX for me.

DH brought home a window from a job today. Double casement, great shape, quality brand....they were just going to throw it away, so into the back of the work truck it went! I started to say something about how it would be PERFECT for a "summer" coop or chick grow-out coop or something and then remembered the discussion we had the other day about me possibly leaving my job and his comment about how my 5-10 hours per week basically supported my chicken hobby.

Which, sadly, is true. I'm charging $2/doz for the summer because I've got eggs coming out my ears and that price moves them a lot faster than $3. So for now, they are paying for their feed and pine shavings. I'll have to seriously scale back the numbers for winter this year.....I was going through more than a bag of feed per week from December through March. Not ruling out a chick coop or something, but I SERIOUSLY doubt he will be ok with ANOTHER coop, especially since we are picking up the coop we bought off my BIL soon (which will bring the coop count to 4, not counting the meat bird pens).

So I have a fermented feed question. I have read it both ways that you CAN and that you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT ferment "mash." I'm interested in possibly switching over but I do NOT want to mess with trying to make my own recipe, find trace minerals and all that. I want to use what I can get, which is layer mash. Anyone know?
