Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Venting: I've had my coop materials for over 2 months now. I have everything from the top to the bottom ready to go. I had 3 "friends" offer to help me build this thing and with their offers I was sure it would get done. Why not? All three friends have years of building experience and were ready and willing to help they said. I might learn something as we go and it would be fun with the fact that I do not have a lot of building experience. I have had all three "friends" bail out on myself for some reason or another. The excuses and attempts to dodge my project have been interesting. From one friend wanting money for everything I do with him, to one quitting after we built the floor because "he got bored" and lastly one that won't just come around. I don't mind if they don't want to help, just let me know your not interested and be honest!

I have the floor installed along with the base. I have all the lumber cut ready to be assembled. I was even lucky to get 6 bundles of good shingles from my brother in-law's housing project. Well, this morning another cancellation. I am determined to say the heck with it and do it myself. I've got friends on BYC anyways!

All while a live in mother in-law asking when those chicks will be out of the basement, she doesn't like "livestock" in where she's staying.

Ugh!
and thank you!

@Spitzboyz WOW. Um, we all love our MIL's right? Mine lived with DH & I for a few years too. Good gravy, I do not wish that on anybody! It is your house right? If so she'll need to be patient & deal with the chicks/"livestock" until you're ready for them to go out.
Everything happens for a reason (firm believer over here), your friends bailed on you, but things will work out the way they were meant to. And maybe BYC is the answer.

I have NO-ZERO-NO construction skills. My DH built our coops years ago but is currently working hellish hours (with a new position at work) and would spit kittens at me if I volunteered his help. So sorry I can't help you there. You said you have the floor & base done? Some pics & design proposals might be helpful for other BYC peeps? Maybe there's someone here that can help but they'd need to know what they're dealing with.

Hope everything works out!! Chickens are awesome. & heck, I'd welcome chickens into my basement before I'd welcome MIL back as a live in. Yes, I love my MIL and enjoy her company... I just can't live with her. Just saying. LOL :)

We pay our help in beer. Gets them out and building every time. If they won't come with the promise of beer, then what kind of friends are they anyway?

OK. I'm feeling like a big idiot right now. I CANNOT remember what the temps were like when I put my white broilers out last year. Seems like I did it at around 1.5 weeks last time because of the stink, but spring came a lot earlier last year. I have a protected area for them to huddle in, and would obviously put a heat lamp out, but it's 37 here today and I don't really feel like throwing all that money away if it's too cold and they all die. I know that they generate a lot more heat than "regular" chicks so they can go out a bit sooner......ugh. Winter needs to get the memo that it's not welcome anymore.

I bet if you google weather conditions on the date you're thinking about, you can get the info you need.

Anyone need some laying hens? I would like to find homes for four of ours to make room for the new chicks. We are in the GR area. They are a BO, 2 BSLs and a SLW. They just started laying in January and lay 6-7 days a week.

I picked up a couple EE's from Jackie this week. One is a possible roo and I only wanted pullets. I am in Paw Paw and drive to Cassopolis once a week if you are interested in him.

Ugh, might be starting to regret getting chickens. I love them all, but it's hard to keep them as pets. All of them have been sick at least twice in 2014. Right now, we have another egg bound chicken! In the past week, there have Ben 6 sick chickens. It's tiring ya know? And in total, med costs gave been $530. All foods are super clean, they have fresh food and water. It's just ridiculous. It's so stressful with a sick chicken a day.

Sorry about ranting :(.

You know what, I just don't know what else to say. :/
