Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Are you sure she is egg bound? Not broody and constipated? Either way there would be white diarhea and no solid poops. What breed?

If so a warm soak in the tub might do it. Alternative is using a chicken baster to squirt olive oil up the bottom to try to help. You need to know that when they get to ghe yellow diarrhea stage it is liver failure and the binding had gone on to long to save her. You have about 3 days to get it before this. Sorry it has been a rough year. Are you going to the vet for all this? Which one? I save vets for emergency only. You could treat most things with a fecal sample to the vet for a diagnosis if you needed help diagnosing, and in my links there is all the appropriate meds/ doses/ suppliers. Not so much money then. Learning ilnesses and how to treat themis part of the learning process for pets; if i can help you i will gladly. I too am working crazy. hours so not always on but i will try! It won't happen all at once but one day you will be guiding someone else on chicken meds. I am curious to hear about the sick ones and what the vet did to treat them so far; wasn't it you that took one in for stitches ?

Venting: I've had my coop materials for over 2 months now. I have everything from the top to the bottom ready to go. I had 3 "friends" offer to help me build this thing and with their offers I was sure it would get done. Why not? All three friends have years of building experience and were ready and willing to help they said. I might learn something as we go and it would be fun with the fact that I do not have a lot of building experience. I have had all three "friends" bail out on myself for some reason or another. The excuses and attempts to dodge my project have been interesting. From one friend wanting money for everything I do with him, to one quitting after we built the floor because "he got bored" and lastly one that won't just come around. I don't mind if they don't want to help, just let me know your not interested and be honest!

I have the floor installed along with the base. I have all the lumber cut ready to be assembled. I was even lucky to get 6 bundles of good shingles from my brother in-law's housing project. Well, this morning another cancellation. I am determined to say the heck with it and do it myself. I've got friends on BYC anyways!

All while a live in mother in-law asking when those chicks will be out of the basement, she doesn't like "livestock" in where she's staying.

Ugh!
and thank you!

Maybe you should get some more chicks.

. There are videos online about shed building, this is one of them, I thinks its step 3, but has links to the other steps.
They make it look & sound sooo easy. Good luck.

The trick is finding a vet who does chickens to even bring a fecal TO that is close and available during non-work hours!!!!

I am remiss in congratulations, daron! I saw that you got engaged!

Silly, the baby goats are looking great! So darn cute! So glad the two little ones are doing good.

My DH and I built our coops. Our boys helped a bit too. We couldn't get any helpers.

We put our 4 week olds outside yesterday. We have a box they can huddle in.

When is spring going to appear on my son's baseball game days? Holy cow it was cold and windy! Luckily Clio's field can be seen from my truck! Less wind more sun is all I'm asking.

Congrats on lovely fiancés, and babies (human and animal), and the near completion on new and beautiful coops!

I'm loving this time of year. Even though today was chilly, it is not winter, my heart is so happy. I clearly do not belong in Michigan.

At 4 weeks old, our blond EE chick is mostly white and is getting a peachy color on her head. She has a single row of peas coming in. Fingers crossed. Our little d'uccle's comb continues to grow quicker than I'd like. We'll probably know for sure by the end of next week if Olive is an Oliver. And at that time, if anyone is looking for a porcelain roo, let me know. ;)

I too am loving this weather....no snow is awesome!, I'm from England and have only been in Michigan for 12 years, have to say I really am disliking winter though !. Getting my first ever small flock of chooks in May and so looking forward to it

I was at Townline yesterday picking up some meat birds for my sister and I and while I was waiting there, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of their equipment, the corridor lined with large steampunk machines dimly lit by single incandescent bulbs, accented with the oversized wire egg baskets full of brown eggs in a spectrum of shades and crates of brown eggs and brown eggs in trays. I wish I'd had my camera and even then they may not have allowed a picture. Maybe I'll ask the next time I'm there.

You were about 10 minutes from me! :) Let me know next time. They do have a wonderful setup. And the people seemed so helpful and cheery!
