Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

HUH! Sheesh, I barely break even with the 1.50-2 I sell for. I sell them for $1.50 if they bring their own containers, and $2 if they don't. I am very upfront about that. The cost to buy egg cartons is 49 cents. SO... Everyone who buys from me brings cartons in trade, but one lady just brings a bucket or a coffee can. Last week, it was her lunch bag. LOL. BUT heck, if she can get them for a dollar, more power to her. Family always sells cheaper to family. I would not sell my eggs for a dollar either. I have a freezer than needs filling. At a dollar, it would not pay for the bag of feed I buy every week. AND now with feed costs having gone up, it barely pays for that, and now too, with winter on the way, I'll be using more feed since foraging will not be in the cards as much.
I'm not even close to breaking even. I just returned from picking up 3 bags of grumble. It was $16.42 per bag. At least it is good fresh feed and the hens love it.

I sell my eggs for $3/dozen to friends from school and $4 to people I don't know. If they become regular customers I drop the price. Family and the neighbors behind me get them for free. But I'm not going to beg anyone to buy eggs from me or haggle over the price.

Newbie!! Glad you joined us!

My hens don't eat the eggs in the nest box, but if someone were to drop an egg in the yard, sometimes they will peck it open to eat. But, I've found eggs that they didn't bother. They sure do love the soft shelled eggs, tho!!

Another beautiful day!! Hope next week end is nice. Taking the grand kids to Yogi Bear Campground for their Halloween Weekend! Sounds like lots of fun. Busy getting decorations to dress up the camper. Use to love decorating for Halloween, but we live off the road a bit, and everyone just parks at the end of the drive way and hand out the candy to the kids. A hay wagon brings them, and since we're only the fourth house, the whold group of kids come at once and in 10 minutes, it's over! So no one even comes near the front door.
It will be our last camping trip for this year.
Have a great day, every one!

Yeah, prices are high and we hate to see them going up, but not enough to get rid of our chickens. I'll cut costs elsewhere in my budget before that happens!

I'm a big fan of temporary fencing. I use the step-in stakes and lightweight mesh netting to move the run around the yard, exclude the chickens from the garden or give the ground a chance to grow new grass. It worked well in integrating new birds to the existing flock as well.

I'm not sure about this wood stove...I have one duraflame log and a stick of oak burning right now. I'm getting too warm.

i use it all the time.

No, not really. It's a play on words from last year when I bought a bag of pellets by mistake and my young pullets wouldn't eat it. They gathered around the feeder and "grumbled". Yorkchick then took it and ran with it.

Speaking of Yorkchick, I haven't heard from her in a long time. Same with some others. Where are you? Don't make me come looking for you! I know where some of you live!

Some happy news...while moving the run fencing and clearing old canes from the raspberry patch, I found a black walnut (Juglans nigra) sapling. In 50 years, I'll start getting walnuts.

between the stove and the hot tub on the other end of the house. Oh yeah, that's right, I've got a wood fired hot tub with this system.

OK you have us all wanting a dip in your hot tub,,, sounds SOO nice

I found a nest of 18 eggs today, don't know how I missed it, In the coop next to a bale of hay, under one of the roosts,, look under the roosts every bight so as not to miss any. Guess I need my eyes checked, I am pretty sure they are OK but to test I drop them in cold water and bad eggs float? Is that correct?

spent another $80 on wood to sure up the run so the wet snow doesn't bring the netting down. WHO SAID CHICKENS CAN PAY FOR THEM SELVES????Love the eggs, Love the meat,Love sitting and watching them run around the yard,BUT ...........
