Cocoa's last gift to me, It's a girl!!! Her girl babies always had big beards, and this one has the biggest beard of them all

"Blondie" so far, but that won't be permanent. Also bearded

I gave up on individual, here's the rest! 6 all together, the other 3 eggs haven't pipped so they are probably quitters.

My little Dominique pullet, Dawn, finally laid her
1st egg today, at 25 weeks old. YEAH.

Oh she is a beautiful bird! I think I might have a few of these in my rainbow pullet pack, I am excited to see how they grow.

Oh, I was watching my chicks, which are 4 weeks old and there is one out of the whole bunch that still only has the downy soft feathers, is the same size as the other birds just doesn't have any of the big feathers that they others have?

Any idea on what happened, I just noticed it today.

Seems like over the weekend there feathers got dark and changed completely on the Isa browns.

I had one in my first batch that just never really developed feathers, or grew much after about 10 days old. It eventually died. I'm not sure what happened, but there was something definitely wrong with it.

My current chickies are also 4 weeks old. This morning the big guys were out in the pen crowing, and inside one of my little Araucana chicks was squeaking a reply back. Is it really possible that at only 4 weeks, it is trying to crow?? I have already seen some 'boy' behavior in this one, but, wow, is it really possible??

Took the dogs for one of our usual walks in the swamp this afternoon. Luna is a lab, Ziggy is half lab, half beagle and usually goes tearing off on a trail hither and yon. This time he pops out on the trail in front of me with a big bird in his mouth. At first I thought CHICKEN but that's impossible, no one but 5 guineas are free ranging today. As I got closer he set it down on the ground for me. It was a ruffed grouse, still alive but in shock. I picked it up, checked it over. There was skin damage on its back and some missing feathers but nothing seemed broken. So I took it back to the house, put it in a grass filled cage with water and food and left it in the sun with a towel draped over one end and crossed my fingers. It sort of listed to one side.

About half an hour later it was sitting up, looked perky and when I approached kept moving away from me. So I put on gloves picked it up again, checked it over, legs and wings were working fine now and it struggled to get away. I sprayed blu-kote on its back then I carried it back to the woods with dogs in tow on purpose. I set it down in the grass and it started running away. Ziggy raced after and cornered it while I yelled NO a couple times really loud and angry like and made him come back to me. The grouse had hidden itself under a downed tree. We left it there. I checked some time later without dogs, walked along a deer trail a few feet and scared it up. It ran away like a normal grouse while making that odd little trilling noise they do. I think it will be okay. And I'm hoping Ziggy realizes now they are as off limits as my birds! He doesn't bother them at all.

Oh great, a funeral again, I have another one with the most crooked beak and my friend said, she might not live long. I am having a horrible death rate with these chicks?? deep breath.

Fuzzy, how cute are they? ALMOST makes me want to get out the incubator - well maybe if there weren't frost on the cars each morning.
Ya, if it hadn't been for my hen's death i'd never do a fall hatching either. Just don't like the idea...... but i'm gonna do my best :)

Probably just the hatchery rations they feed the hens, if that's where you got them from. I think they hatch pullet eggs too, i've heard mixed reviews on that. You can try upping the vitamins, sometimes that helps but not always.

Update on cocoa's baby, (The one who spraddled) she's doing great! I think when she got stuck she had pulled a ligament, but not badly thank God. After it had happened i had gently stretched the leg and pushed the joint with thumb and finger, and thought i felt a pop. When i had tried to put her down though it had gone back, so then i had taped. This afternoon a friend had brought over band aids, so off came the tape and she was all better!!! She's a tad wobbly because she didn't get to work her muscles as much as the others but she's been talking about it for hours :) Bumbling all over happily. :)

I'll be keeping an eye out, just in case but looks like it just needed to get the swelling down while it was in the right position, so it didn't "heal" stuck that way

Came home from yet another walk and found more than half the chickens running around the yard, mostly at a red can with food that I'd left on the wood pile by the deck. Apparently I hadn't secured the coop door well enough and they busted through. Grabbed some corn, closed the door, then proceeded to entice them back into the run. I can't believe it worked and I didn't lose anyone to the fox or day time owl or even the hawk that I saw grab a bird in the maple tree yesterday. I am so lucky!
