Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Shooting the coon won't make it safe for nugget.  Home depot, lowes, or your local hardware should have 36" hardware cloth.  1/2 " will work, bury a foot of it under ground and securely attach it to the fence you have, it keeps coon fingers out and chicken heads in and prevents predators from digging under the fence.  That way you don't have to worry about predators as long as your pen is otherwise secure.  I'm so glad she survived.

@Horseychicken
Agree with Trefoil & others about the hardware cloth. I'm very glad that I listened to them when getting my coop set up last year (you can see pix of it in an album in my profile). The entire pen is done with 1/2" hardware cloth (including the top that doesn't have a metal roof). I also,have it buried 12" deep, 12" out AND 12" up again around the perimeter. The only thing getting in is a bear or human! We have so many raccoons,coyotes, etc. it isn't even funny.

Very glad Nugget is ok :)

And, welcome to the Michigan thread; the advice & support you will get here is invaluable; both chicken and non-chicken related !

There will always be a coon or other predator that will follow behind the one you dispose of. The more secure your coop/rum is, the less risk there is to your birds.

I'm surprised you guys didn't catch this...... have ta keep me rum secure.

Could someone give me some ideas on what would cause rate of lay to decline? I have two pullets in their first year of lay. They both started laying eggs in April. One was laying an egg a day for about 20 days in a row, then taking a day off. She's now down to 7 days, then a day off. The other was laying for 7 days in a row, and she's now down to 2 or 3 days before she takes a day off. I don't see any signs of illness in either of them. I have 2 hens with these two that are a year older than these, and their rate of lay has not changed. I did add 3 younger pullets about two weeks ago to this group, and thought at first that that may have unsettled them, but I haven't seen an improvement yet. Any thoughts? What should I be looking for?

If anyone is interested in laying hens, I've made the sad decision to sell my entire laying flock, 60+ hens. They will be a year old the 2nd week in August. There are RIR, Barred Rock, RSL, BSL, EE, SLW, Columbian W, BO, Leghorn,Partridge Rock, Brahma, and a few other breeds.
I also have 17 two week old Guinea keets and my breeding stock of Black Copper and B/B/S Marans from Wynette.
I was hoping I wasn't going to have to make this decision, it makes me very sad to give everything up.
Please PM me any questions.

RCHD, so sad you have to give them up. I hope they find good homes.

X2 :(
So sorry you had to make that decision @RoostersCrow,HensDeliver!
Wish I had the room..especially for the BCMs...love my 2 I got from Wynette last year.

Of course, love all my birds...except Mean Girl at the moment (bully PR). She's picking on Rana & Kali (blue & black Ameraucanas I got from Wynette @ CS) who are just now being intro'd to flock after quarantine. Don't know if she's gonna get her belly rub tonight...
