Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Taking a break from the bad news I decided to brighten someones day. These are my newest breeders. The sand doe is the baby I brought to CS14 but nobody wanted so I decided to keep her. To re-invigorate the bloodlines I drove to Belding and bought (oh lordy) the (tiny) grey buck (although he does have a streak of sand down his back from his mama). The doe is now about 18 weeks old and the buck only 5 weeks old. So, next spring the older lady will be meeting her younger man with hopes of some new coloration. After seeing the bucks parents I'm thinking offspring will be in the 20 pound class - maybe bigger? Oh, and for those not in rabbits they are Flemish Giants which I breed.

@uchytil I'm not really into rabbits either but I know the Flemish Giant. And while I absolutely love the breed I'm not knowledgeable enough to take on such a large starter pet. That's why I was so adamant that my son wasn't allowed to take her home even though she is beautiful. :)

A question for you (or any rabbit owner), from a "not so rabbit" person like me. Can you give me a run down on raising rabbits? You know, in all my years, my brain has just adopted the reasoning that I use the word "bunny" when I want to describe cute/cuddly & I use the word "rabbit" when I want to describe gangly/technical.

Ya, I know. But I don't really know much about them other than a few of the different breeds.

Please educate me. :) Maybe someday we might acquire rabbits on our farm (in the very VERY FAR future) so it doesn't hurt to learn now. I know a lot about chickens, and enough about goats... but minimal about rabbits.

They taste good.

Mindylee, you need a better lawyer.  You should be suing his insurance company and him personally.  I think notifying your congresspeople would also be a good plan, as well as the local prosecutor, the sheriff's office, the State Police, MADD, and any local law enforcement agencies that may be involved.  A clear, well-stated, minimally emotional letter may get things moving in a better direction for you.  Be clear that you intend to pursue this matter no matter what.

Raz, do you have a lawyer?  What does he/she say?

Unfortunately its a no fault state and he had no insurance so he gets the upper hand. We could sue but how. He's poor without a job. Can't get blood from a rock. The best layer won't even waste time as the case is pointless cause there is no money to be made as the guy is a no good drunk who still live in his mommy's basement at almost 40yrs old. We talked to all kinds of folks on this one and because my hubby works for a company... That is y the guy can sue us.
For all who have insurance policies... Take a good look at the the small fine print and how we all pay for none insured drivers here in our state... You will be floored! Pretty much what its saying is it don't matter if you have no insurance. Your covered by folks who do.

When I arrive with your "bunny" we will do the "run down", lol! I have a mixed FG/NZ right now that needs a home. I've been free ranging him daily but really need to find him a new home. He will be mid-size. Free to any CS pal who reads this. He's the last of a batch that nobody wants, boo hoo. My add is on Craigslist Muskegon and I think the title is "Rabbit". It shows a mess of bunnies with the Mom. I was asking 15 smackaroos but for ya'll he's a big goose egg.

Seriously though, raising them is this they eat, poop, and eat, and poop. The poop is great fertilizer. They easily live outside in a hutch you can build from scrap wood and hardware cloth. They chew so I throw in chunks of wood for them to rip up. You can trim toenails every so often. Not too complicated. The one thing they don't like is heat. During the hottest periods (90 plus) I have frozen water bottles I set in the hutch to act as air conditioning.

And yes, they taste good, lol!

LOL. It might be a good thing that my DS doesn't read this thread. He sure wanted one. :) We don't have a hutch, cage, or anything for a "bunny" set up. Thinking about it though if I got him a rabbit he might be a better participant at the farm chores. LOL. Right now in his opinion it's "the chickens are mom's & sister's... the goats are dad's... so he's exempt from most of the work". I try to convince him the farm is a "family responsibility". It only flies so far as picking out chicks in the spring & eating eggs. LOL :)
