Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Tomorrow is the opening day of gun season. This will be the first time in too many years that only David and I will be hunting on our property. With my old farmer's nephew and all of his friends no longer allowed I am actually looking forward to hunting this year. Last year I was in an operating room on opening day so this year is an improvement for that reason as well.

I hope all our hunters are successful and that everyone stays safe.

Get out there and break the buck pole!

Hope all the hunters are having success!

I haven't seen any here yet..though it did sound like a war zone from about 7:10-8:40am!
Hopefully I'll have some luck later today...

DH has gotten 3 so far today where he is hunting, thus, our freezer is now full; any more this season will go to the food bank and families in need.

Everyone stay safe and warm

Happy hunting to all. I wont be out there this year. Balance is to bad. I will hope my son gets one for my freezer as well as his own. Be safe and lucky enough to fill your freezers.

So I got the tractor "Parked" next to the garage to block it from the west winds around here. The plan is to staple on some chicken wire to form a shirt around the tractor to keep critters from getting in, and then stacking some straw bales around it to help block the wind more as the shower curtains around the coop only reach down so far. I also got a heated water bowl for the girls to drink out of, but I put a straw bale on the inside to cover the grass up there, build up some litter. I sat the bowl up on some 4 inch thick bricks, but right now the girls seem to be insisting on putting the straw inside of the water bowl. Thinking tomorrow I'm going to find some taller bricks to put the water on, see if that keeps them from stuffing straw into it.

And for the buck pole here, my brother bagged a spike horn he said. I hope this one is bigger than the last one he got. he got one a year ago that was about the size of a german shepherd. I keep telling him he needs to let them grow more, but with young bucks growing up around farms, you get some pretty tasty venison that way.

This thread has been awfully quiet, everyone must be out hunting.

Both yesterday and today my son decided to sit in my deer blind with me. What a wonderful way to spend a weekend. Kind of nice knowing that at 46 years old he still likes spending time with me. This was the best start of the hunting season we have had in years. While the only deer that offered a certain shot was a nice 1 1/2 old 8 point that we let walk, it still was a great time. This was the first time in to many years that we had the farm entirely to ourselves. My old friend told his nephew and all of his friends that they were no longer welcome and not having others stomping all over the woods made sure made for a better experience.

While a trophy buck would be nice, my primary concern is filling the freezer. We only intend to shoot a buck if it surpasses what we already have hanging on the wall. The only way to improve the quality of the deer herd is to not take big bucks during the rut, and to no shot young bucks that show great potential. A friend of mine claims that if we don't shoot them some else will, but deer management has to start somewhere. I have seen bucks that I let walk during the late doe only season, so I know that they often survive.

That is a wonderful picture you've painted @Opa. I can almost see you guys sitting there. I wish my dad could still go out and do things with me.

I agree with you on deer management. I hit a huge doe with my car last year and felt just awful. I no longer hunt for other reasons, but winning the buck pole was Never my goal, just food on the table.
