Maggots are actually used sometimes to debride dead tissue from wounds. Since they will not penetrate into living tissue, they would not be able to get rid of infections. And

Partitioned off from the flock, will remove chicken wire partition wall a couple days after hatch(if they hatch).

Last night my oldest son sent me photos of the black white face steer that he killed for me. It was quietly feeding and suddenly it wasn't. A totally unstressed kill will result in a great final product. Heading south soon to butcher but the cloud of my upcoming surgery hanging over me definitely will put a damper on the trip.

You have my sympathy regarding the flu –nasty business. I have found a heated dog watering bowl (similarly heated as a heated birdbath) that I hooked up in my coop. If you have power out there I would recommend it. I put it on a couple of boards to get it slightly off the ground to keep my “kicking” chickens from filling it with dirt while they are taking a sand bath. It never freezes and I only have to clean it about once a week. I only have 4 chickens so it lasts for a week – it holds about a gallon of water. It saves a lot of watering trips. I put a small waterer in their actual house they sleep in every night which seems to do the trick. It often freezes up but they only seem to want water just after their last “snack” before bed. I know they are spoiled!
