Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh, whoops. I'm not from Michigan...

I don't know what I was thinking!

Hi everybody. I thought I'd show off my new hoop coop. Right now it's a grow out pen for my 6 week old chicks. They love the room and I love having them outside

The tarp can be pulled back for air flow or pulled forward to keep the wind and rain out. Technically it's mobile, but I'm not going to try to often. It's really heavy! Anyway I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Thx, do you know a good place to pick that up? I have TSC and Family Farm and Home near me. Also Wal Mart/Meijer, and a hardware store.
Got my slaked lime at FFH. : )

I wanted to share with everyone my newest members to my coop and cant wait for their arrival next week.
These are new pair of chocolate cochin bantams i won on a auction.
I have a project of them im working on and have 5 beautiful pullets here and with these 2, it will greatly improve my goal on my type here. As well as adding outside bloodlines.
Here they are!!! Im so excited!!!
Congrats on your new pair! I'm not all into breeding (yet) since this is my first year with chickens and my focus is simply on keeping them ALIVE. I look to my right and see the plants in my window that I have killed. Good luck in your quest.

So... What is a Michigan thread?
A Michigan thread is one where talk about most anything. C'mon, we're pretty friendly. No you don't have to be from MI. We do gripe about all five seasons though. (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and What The -)

Tomorrow is the day I've been waiting for! I'm going to Eastern Market to get my flowers for the year! I broke down and got the big galvanized tub from TSC for my herbs; oregano, dill, and lots of sweet basil. Two hanging baskets will have flowers. I'd love to do some sweet potato vine and put it with a white flower. We're not doing vegetables this year-again, focusing on keeping healthy chickens. Going out to free range the girls, sip coffee, and count how many pots I have.

Let's hope my new plants fare better than the ones in my window...

Influenza viruses are fairly fragile in the environment and do not overwinter in soil, fortunately for us all. They do, apparently, have the ability to be carried for distances as an aerosol particle. A few articles for those interested -

Please note that this is speculation only - no one really knows what the transmission pathway has been.

Some of the key factors in transmission of flu viruses are the strain involved and the population's immunity to it (these viruses are great mutators and change their type frequently), crowding, air quality, housing (things such as heating/ventilation and feeding/watering), and stress, in addition to many other factors. You can see why a large population of susceptible individuals in close contact with each other and under the stress of crowding and rapid growth could be more easily affected.

I have to admit my mechanically inclined father helped me a lot, but we did get it done in a couple days. So much easier than my big coop.

. I have to admit I keep thinking of more uses for them. I might need a breeding pen in the future after all. For this year I plan to put some freedom rangers in it until they are big enough to be dinner!
