Had a little date night tonight with the girlfriend.  got to talking about future chicken plans, and she stated that I should get some Brown chickens next year to add to my flock.  going to have to think about what breed of brown chickens would work with my flock.  

I breed chocolate cochin bantams.

try craigs list...roosters are so prevalent it's hard to get rid of them sometimes. They could always be sent to freezer camp.

Last I checked our ducks had laid 26 eggs but no one cares to sit so I broke down and bought an incubator. Going to put them all in tomorrow so fingers crossed for a good first hatch!

I've actually been looking into building an incubator. I really want to set some of my chicken eggs soon. I'm fighting that urge since the eggs are still a bit small and hens a bit young.

This chick is the instigator of the group; always getting into things that the mom hens get upset about.

After buying this one building one doesn't appear to be difficult. I just didn't have the time to build one on my own. My viability will be low with a couple of them

At about 3 weeks old, they were ready to sleep outside. Momma hen wasn't having any of that!
First time I ever saw a chicken goose a duck.

She made them go to the coop for the night.

That is what I was told.
I have to laugh at how the mother hen reacts when they do their duck thing.

I got lucky here....local hobby farm lost a bunch of layers to predation and asked me to incubate some eggs for them.
What fun to hatch chicks and not have to raise them.......or deal with the males!!
They both work full time, so me being home based part time self employed have the time to monitor an incubation.
Bartering a dozen of my fertile eggs(for colorful eggs) and incubation duties for some lamb chops grown on their farm.
I've already bought some lamb from them and traded some older laying hens(that I was going to butcher anyway) for a ready to butcher CX.
They just started a batch of turkeys too, so am anticipating a deal on one of those on the 'hoof' at about 8-10 lbs...yumm!

This is why I started with chickens.... to 'know my food'....to be able to barter locally for other meats is awesome.
