Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Notice how green his legs are. Or is that considered "slate" colour?
This chick is the instigator of the group; always getting into things that the mom hens get upset about.

they say most white EE's
are roo's
At about 3 weeks old, they were ready to sleep outside. Momma hen wasn't having any of that!
First time I ever saw a chicken goose a duck.

I got lucky here....local hobby farm lost a bunch of layers to predation and asked me to incubate some eggs for them.
What fun to hatch chicks and not have to raise them.......or deal with the males!!
They both work full time, so me being home based part time self employed have the time to monitor an incubation.
Bartering a dozen of my fertile eggs(for colorful eggs) and incubation duties for some lamb chops grown on their farm.
I've already bought some lamb from them and traded some older laying hens(that I was going to butcher anyway) for a ready to butcher CX.
They just started a batch of turkeys too, so am anticipating a deal on one of those on the 'hoof' at about 8-10 lbs...yumm!

This is why I started with chickens.... to 'know my food'....to be able to barter locally for other meats is awesome.
good job, sounds like a plan

our girls have been busy the past couple days . . . . . 21 eggs yesterday & 24 today out of 27 hens (25 of 28 if i count the legbars 1st egg today)
:- )

That is really awesome, can't remember when or if I ever got such good lay ratio. out of 30 birds, (5) broody's, we got 14 eggs the last 3 days
I have not been very social lately but I have been busy, lol! My son's wedding is Aug 15th and we finally got the lower level of the barn emptied, chased most of the mice out, and cleaned the floor. I still have a list that only Superman could complete but that's the way it goes. In a nutshell all of my critters are doing fine. I finally sold my last spring bunny to a cute couple - she had a FG buck pet that had died and got my last one - a buck! I think after the wedding I'll start messing things up again and do a flock of CCross for winter. What else?

Hopefully everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer.
congratulations on your sons wedding, a lot of work but just think when it is all over you will have a nice clean barn to fill back up

Hi All! I'm brand new to BYC and I dont have any chickens yet! I'm trying to find information on if I can have chickens in my county which is Livingston. I live in town in Brighton, MI. I cant seem to find any information online that mentions if having back yard chickens is legal. Can someone help?

Best place to look is under your "township" rules if you live in a township. I would call the place who collects your property taxes and ask about zoning rules for your area regarding backyard chickens. Good luck :)
