Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

DH had an accident at work today. A 36' long, 18" tall, 1400 lb metal beam rolled over on his leg. Surgery to stabilize it today, surgery to repair in about 2 weeks. Possibly a third surgery down the road. The ankle is pretty crushed. They called it a pilon fracture. Will be a long road to recovery. We are waiting for a cat scan to see if the joint cartilage was damaged at all. They are hopeful that it is intact. Even without damage to the cartilage/joint, the orthopedic surgeon said it will probably be 6 months before he might be able to walk without some kind of aid. There will be no walking of any kind for a number of weeks as it is. If you choose to see it, the pictures below show post op stabilization of the leg.
Brethren, I'm so sorry this happened to your DH. I had a situation in '04 where I crushed my left leg just below the knee and my knee cartilage was shoved down a few inches. I had a similar (bigger) fixator until the repair surgery and recovery did take about 6 months as I slowly made my way from one aid to the last. If they offer any type of rehabilitation service after his surgery, it would be good to do. They teach you everything you need to know in getting around while not being mobile. I would never have thought to maneuver in some of the ways they showed me. It was really helpful.

I will keep your DH in mind and hope everything goes okay for you both over the next few weeks.

what is he going to be able to wear? It's not like a pants leg will fit over or around this contraption.

For now, I think I will get some rest. Have a feeling I will be needing it.
Is your home warm enough for shorts? Otherwise, the sweat pant/velcro idea sounds pretty good.

Hi all! I'm from the Genesee County area, does anyone know where I can buy Organic Chicken Feed at a reasonable price? I have 8 laying hens and they are all pets.

I was feeding them Purina Layena but just switched to Kent Home Fresh Extra Egg 16 because it looked like a better feed to me. I would really prefer an organic feed, but the only one I found at Family Farm and Home store was really pricy ($10 more per bag)!

Any thoughts? Or recommendations on the best feed? (Even if its not organic)

I'm in Tuscola Co, I don't know any place around that even sells organic, and to try to ship it would be really expensive. Kent makes a good quality feed and it also is available in the higher protein that guineas and turkeys, ect. need. When I have to buy commercial feed i buy kent. Everything seems to like it. I get it at the Millington elevator, where do you get yours?

Yes please let us know if we can help!

When I was relearning how to walk I had to wear good running shoes with sticky rubber soles, so I would not slip. I tried to get away with not wearing them and guess what... I slipped.
Slip proof shoes is a excellent idea. It wasn't a shoe, but I had a crutch slip on me during winter before I was able to put weight on my leg and it was not cool.

Hey!
It is the hens fault if you have too many roos
Not the males... or Mom2's... LOL
I did not know that the females determine the sex of the chick! Very interesting!

heyyy now..really lets just blame the hens! I think roos should have blue shells. then we would know to eat THOSE eggs and not incubate them. :p

Brethern sorry to hear about your husbands leg. My husband has a pair of hunting pants that have a zipper up the leg (supposed to make it easier to put hunting boots on). That style may be helpful.

Thank you everyone for all of the good thoughts, suggestions and offers of help. He ended up staying in the hospital again last night.
Pain he has is being managed by Vicodin, Percoset, and Morphine. His Osteoporosis will make healing a challenge they fear. Hopefully, he will only be in the contraption until the next surgery, but we did find a pair of snap side pants at the Goodwill (love that store!) and a couple of pairs of pajama pants I will be adding the velcro to. He won't be walking any time soon, so shoes won't be an issue for a time. Someone mentioned underwear? Yeah, won't be able to wear those either. A man's dream I suppose.. LOL!!

On another note, I did go up to Taprock's and pick up the hens from Stacykins yesterday. Taprock and her son were great in taking care of them until I could make it up there. They showed me there flock and coops, but I just couldn't stay too long. The hens made the trip seemingly well, even laying an egg in the cage on the trip home. Big beautiful blue egg, but no egg song. I don't know if Stacykins had the hens named or not, but I have named them
Stella, CiCi, and Kelly so as to never forget how generous
Stacykins has been in giving me her beautiful birds.

BFM Thanks for the links on sexing chicks, very helpful
Well, just looked down in the run and the birds are out.... I must have forgotten to close the poop door, I had it closed and they saw a hen knocking that had not come in yet, so re-opened, ,,,guess I better go give them some food.....always try to remember to put it away at night,,,, no food out no coons come to eat, ...completely enclosed run but they still seem to find a way in on occasion if I leave food out
