Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Cornishx birds are mostly processed at about eight weeks of age, and are very tender and tasteless. Could I say mushy meat? It's going to taste better than grocery store birds, but still pretty bland. Rangers grow slower, act like real chickens, and are mostly processed at about twelve to fourteen weeks of age. They won't be as soft and round as the Cornishx, and will have more flavor. Mary

How many did you end up with? How do you like the Rangers? I've heard great things about them compared to the Corn X. I can't wait till I have some property to free range. Then I'll be in the meat market. :D
I got 14 from Family Farm and Home, but one failed to thrive on me, so there's 13 birds at 8 weeks right now.

Yeah, and the Cornish tend to have feet issues due to them growing and putting on weight so fast. Some of my Rangers do have some goofy looking feet, but they seem to get along pretty good. Some of the cockerels I have are big tanks and I could probably process them now.

I've been told that the Freedom Rangers are much better at "being chickens". They actually free range well, hence the name, and all that ranging comes out in the flavor of the meat. The Cornish X just lay there and dont forage at all. They only eat whats put out for them. Don't know if its true, but I have a friend who raises meat birds and thats what she's told me.

Cornish X will range if given the right set up and feeding schedule.
