Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I've 'officially' retired, but plan to keep working part time as long as possible. MUST KEEP MOVING!!!
Friday w had a disaster; went shopping, leaving the dogs out in the back yard. Didn't realize that the IF collar batteries were dead! One of my dogs got out and killed half of my flock. AWFUL!!!
She was being a dog, never trained 'chicken avoidance' and so am totally responsible. A very bad day! One injured rooster doing okay with meds, but many gone.
I've placed an order with Cackle, and will be hatching chicks from eggs this week.
I've been busy, and totally missed essential dog management, and the poor birds payed for it.
Damn!

I hate when that happens. My demon dog killed one of my turkey last fall. Turkey was first attacked by a wild predator and I was treating him in the garage. Damn devil dog finished him off while I was distracted. You feels so bad when that happens.

The pup is nearly a year old now and I still watch him around the chickens. He HAS helped show me the weak spots in my run. SOB was leaping from a wood pile over the fence and got into the run a couple of times. I moved the wood and put up some netting. So far no losses to predators or wild pups.

Thanks, it's been a bad week. Our worse losses ever, and all on me! Solo, my avatar, is gone, and the remaining Chanty rooster is not my favorite, but survival skills and luck count for something, I guess. I've ordered ten Chanties from Cackle, and Candy was planning on some from Sandhill, so maybe some good ones will arrive.
Hope to hatch some Belgian d'Uccles and EE bantams as replacements too.
Today was so beautiful! Warm, sunny, very springlike. YES!

Sorry to hear that Mary. Hopefully you can get your flock put back together and train the dogs to leave the chickens alone.

I would be kinda tempted to give you a pair of 5 year old BSL to help you out. Not really sure if they're still laying, but they could be useful for a year to teach some younger pullets how things are done. With the chicks I got here, that would put me at 20 and that's pretty much the limit of my big coop right now.

I know that sickening feeling, you aren't alone. Animals being themselves is not an easy thing to break or change.

I worked at Lowes, in the commercial sales division. (pro desk now) I may have still been working there if they hadn't drove me out with their bull malarkey! I am glad though because I got a much better job, with the work I enjoy. I'm a facility manager for a global auto insurance resources company - we don't do insurance, but we provide products and services for the auto insurance industry. I had to learn a lot of things in trial by fire (they fired my manager after my first two weeks). I had to teach myself my job. But, I manage our generator systems, HVAC and UPS systems, the building, all safety protocol.. assistant staff, all sorts of things, and I am pretty much left alone to do my thing, hands off boss, just the way I like it. Very flexible schedule. I am hoping to work myself into a higher position that would allow me to work from home (ie a different location) as in to move to Tennessee in a few years and still keep my job into retirement ) 2030 ish.

I am going to toss a few eggs in the bator to see if I can hatch a few. Lets see if the chicks will be more thrifty with a little jungle fowl blood in their veins!
