Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It is pretty much impossible to sanitize a dirt base run, as organic debris (dirt, poop, straw, etc) prevent sanitizers and disinfectants from getting to organisms. Plus, you will kill off the beneficial organisms that break down waste product as well. The best way to clean out a pen is to vacate it for at least 3 months, and let the sun dry things out.

Raz, I will take some of those Sapphire gems off your hands... let me know what you have available and how much. Those are just what I was hoping to get a hold of! I still plan to hit CS19 and hope nothing changes it!

I went to TX last week for work, (right where the tornado touched down Wed). Came back with new job/title and hopefully hefty increase. I'll be traveling more often but home on weekends.

What a day! It was chilly today but I'm glad the sun was shining. Hubby took me for a Harley ride this afternoon after work. We both needed it after all the stress we've both been through this past week.
Any one have any experience or two cents to share for using oxine to sanitize coops? Also any recommendations for sanitinging runs? Coops and covered runs are fixed.
One thing you can do to freshen the outer run up a bit, is to turn the soil. I just do a full shovel depth, and flip it over... chickens will scratch it out, love digging for worms etc... and you have fresher dirt at the surface. Or a small tiller if you can get it in the run. mixing in some sand will help with drainage etc...

Mutts and Silly I appreciate both of your input.
Mutts my dilemma is I have 8 pullets housed my my garage in a brooder that won't be big enough very soon. I can clean, sanitize and scrub my big coop which is 8x8 and put them in there in about 30 days. I'm so terrified they are going to or have contracted what my hens had it has turned me into an emotional train wreck. I can pull the top 4 or so inches of soil/sand out of the run and replace it with new not from my yard. I grew up on a small farm and have never had to deal with this before.

Sounds like a plan. I do have CS19 as a scheduled day off. I just need a few days before hand to do the wood projects. Not sure how far I'll get. Just one caveat...I hope I have gas money to get there and back. Payday is this Friday and I'm not sure that I'll have gas to get there. :he

What a day at work yesterday was. I got called in early because they had a couple of people call in. The cashier was visibly ill and the "manager" was no where in sight. Brooder tanks were awful; dirty, stinky, and empty feeders and waterers. That was the last straw for me. I gave notice today. My last day will be Saturday and I'll start a new job on Sunday.

You endured longer than most would have. Best of luck to you.

Wish I could make it to CS this year but it's my weekend to work and about a 3 hour drive of I obide the speed limit. Maybe next year I will be better prepared to go. It would be nice to put faces and names together.
