Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

One of the other reasons I don't have horses... I love em........ and would love to have one.. but way to high maintenance, costly and unpredictably dangerous.

aart - lol, I can just picture your chickens running around with a picked clean femur, playing keep away from the others! lol! May want to stock up on their gravel!

I generally always try to keep my phone on me. Though my luck I'd fall in an area where I'd have no service. Even when my DH is home, any calls for help would go un-noticed, he's very wife deaf.......he wouldn't notice, until it got really dark....... and late. He often locks me out of the house...hmmm...he never checks to lock doors when I'm inside or when we leave for work.. only does it when I am out doing chores. Lots of underlying messages there! LOL! I do it to him on purpose once in a while, he doesn't like it. :plbb

Yes, it was Dr. Ragan, and lucky to be alive!
I've had some close calls too, with my own very nice horses, and decided early on that working on them is outside of my comfort zone.
I carry my cell phone when I'm outside, especially, and hope to be able to call on it in an emergency. Randy, do you have yours with you all the time?
Last evening we had some nice close lightening strikes! No obvious damage, so far.

Exactly!
When I first moved here 20 years ago and was working in the woods with a chainsaw, I carried my work cellphone with me. Weeks into the project I checked, no service.
Still lousy cell coverage here, why I have a landline and DSL internet.
If I don't post on FB every day, my one person will call or come looking...
...that's my only backup.

Can anyone refer me to any other breeders in Michigan? NOT hatcheries please. The Thumb/Mid-Michigan region would be best really anywhere in the LP is worth a look see. The breeder forum only lists 2 and only one of those has chickens. And they have only one other breed I am interested in:hmm

If it is helpful, these are the particular breeds I am interested in:
*most interested

  1. BRAHMA-dark, light, buff
    BUCKEYE
    *DORKING
    JAVA
    JERSEY GIANT
    *ORPINGTON
    RIR
    *WYANDOTTE-particularly heritage colors
    *HOUDAN-mottled and perhaps others
    SUSSEX-speckled and perhaps others

The breeder forum
Here on BYC?
IME many of the experienced and serious breeders have left BYC,
too many hatchery stock keepers.

Best bet is to find an APA breed club(for each of the breeds you want) and see if they have members in MI.

Beware that many call themselves 'breeders', but are just reproducing hatchery birds.

Yup. I even looked through the Conservancy to get info and there is literally ONE I found through searching FB starting at the only named heritage breeder in the Thumb area. This is crazy.

Not sure it's 'crazy', but it sure can be disappointing.
APA shows and breeders are not the same movement as backyard chickens.
Was one of the biggest disappointments when I first started was finding 'pure' breed birds.

@Beccazan, check out the 'Fowl Fest' poultry show, coming up in Birch Run, across the street from the mall, the weekend of October 12th. Many breeds will be there, and the Chanteclers are having their national show.
It's best to visit Saturday, and actually talking to exhibitors isn't easy, but try contacting the breed groups first.
