Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

They haven't been too bad. They are pretty calm for huskies. They do like to chew on things so we are switching to crates tonight
keep in mind that huskies are better hunters then many breeds and will go after the chickens if left alone. We had a huskie mix, beautiful dog, well behaved, never touched the chickens if I was in the yard, but had a real hard time not chasing if I was not there. Might be different if they are raised with the chickens, mine was a rescue.

I don't have any chickens. They are pretty calm for the most part which everyone is amazed by for their breed but I also know they are natural hunters so I don't let them in our house with my cat cause that's her territory. They just sleep in the guest house/garage

Michelle, my food is in the coop all year round, keeps it away from squirrels, chipmunks and wild birds. Water is inside in freezing weather, outside otherwise.
Thanks for the info. I have a metal grandmas feeder that is still in the box. It’s got a latch that the girls need to step on in order to open the lid. Perhaps I will put that in the coop as a third feeder. They just hang out in there…it’s very strange. They seem content but I go out every day and tell them to go outside and play!!! Perhaps I need some chicken toys in the run.

I have a contractor come to the house yesterday and he commented on all the clover I have in the yard and asked why I dont have the girls out. It would be my luck…the day I let them out to free range, they get a wild hair and run away and then a hawk swoops down and grabs one. I could never live with myself. They have the 10+ sf per bird and now that the dumpster is gone, I may extend an uncovered but HC covered open run on the other side of the coop. It never ends….

I *think* the strife between my bottom hen and the littles *might* be slowing down. The littles are 10 1/2 weeks old now, and about 2/3 (?) the size of the adults. So they're too big for any panic doors.

I've been doing a joint snack time, by putting the mash along both sides of the dividing fence, scattered on the ground. The last two days have gone pretty well, and I plan to do this for another week and reassess the strife level.

I'm thinking that when I take the fence down, I'll rearrange just about everything in the run, so everybody will have to get used to the new layout. I also have some new stuff to put in the run for clutter, and I'll put that in when I take down the fence.

Any other suggestions on what else I can do for integration?

My hen that hatched chicks out a few months ago went broody again and would not stop sitting, so I chucked her back in with her half-grown chicks, which she was definitely done with. Ticked her off and knocked the broody right out of her. When I let her back out with the adult group yesterday there was some scuffling and hen battles, which the rooster did his job to break up, and today peace has returned.
A lot of that kind of ruckus will solve itself, once the young birds learn to get out of the way of the adults.

Hoo boy am I tired. Exhausted is probably the better word. It might be the new meds I started or it could just be getting old. At any rate I'm in a darn good mood. I've been getting a lot of chores done. Neighbors gave me a refrigerator for the garage so I have been getting the garage organized and that feels good. Got a full week's pay check that I haven't had in several weeks. That is if you consider 25 hours as a "full" week.

Anyway, I did my volunteer work at the Cheeseburger festival last night and I had a blast working the gate for the concert. So many pretty ladies to flirt with all night long. I'll be doing it again tomorrow and Saturday nights. Sunday is the car show. I'll have my car there and a few friends will have theirs too. It is supposed to be a good weather day for the event. It's always fun to see all the nice cars there.

Chickens are doing well. Getting lots of eggs every day but I'm not selling so many. Excess eggs get boiled or scrambled as treats for the dog and the birds. It's getting close to the fall deep cleaning of the chicken coop. I have every thing ready to go just ass soon as I get a few days off. That should happen pretty soon since I told them at work that I only want to work 2 or 3 days a week. That will depend on how much I can make once the social security kicks in. I want to work just enough to keep my employee discount.

Hopefully I'm turning the corner on this crap show that has been in the last year and a half. Finally having some fun.
