Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh yeah.

Anybody here grow potatoes? When do you plant them?
My grandpa said Good Friday. And he would even if he shoveled snow to get to the ground. His potatoes usually, if not always, did well.

The rest of us tend to do well with them anywhere from mid-March to early May. Maybe earlier or later depending on the weather that year.

Too wet and they will rot. In a trench, not too wet, covered in straw or hay, works best here, and not in April!
It may depend on what kind of soil you have. We have a lot of sand so too wet isn't an issue.
In the past, it's been mid-May when I planted potatoes. Then I read to plant "as soon as the soil can be worked." Well, that can be the beginning of April, and even earlier. The soil where I put them is sandy, sandy, sandy.

I always seem to miss a few when I'm digging in the fall, and find them growing in the spring. That's why I'm wondering if it would be ok to plant them this week or next. I might just plant some of the ones sprouting in the basement, and see what happens.

I think I'll set some fence posts today. It's already up to 60. I want to remove the old cheap plastic mesh that I used last year to keep the chickens out of the garden. I want to reset some posts and expand the garden.

I've been watching a crow for about an hour. He has been gathering up peanuts and flying back across the road. I'm guessing that there is a mate in a nearby nest. On one trip he had 4 peanuts in his bill. He was very selective in picking out the peanuts. It's darn entertaining.
