Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have a question....at what temperature do you guys keep your chickens locked in the coop....if you do at all?
Mine are locked in the run. I've been told by many that they will be fine (depending on the breed, whether or not they are cold hardy) but since this is my first winter I worry a little. Check mypetchickens.com to see if your breeds are cold hardy

I ordered all cold hardy birds. I just was wondering if its better to keep them in the coop on the really cold days.
Well, like I said. Mine are outside but locked in the run with the option to go in the coop. I also have a wind break on the run so I feel ok with them being out there. I probably won't let them out for a few days though...

I take my girls out warm breakfast every morning, and they come outside to eat.. since its been colder i just leave the door to the coop opened enough so if they want to go outside they can, i have 5 hens, isa browns and new hampshire red. they are pretty cold hardy..

Today they barely wanted to eat outside.. and tomorrows temps is suppose to be 0 degrees, and -5 next day during day.. so i closed up the coop like i do at night. will go out later and let them out a little while.. they are doing just fine, just figured i would keep the coop warm since its going to be some freezing days coming..still getting eggs.. got 3 / 5 hens.. so i am happy for that..

This is our first winter with chickens. We have a solid coop that doesn't have any drafts, it has good ventilation, there's a good, deep layer of bedding, and their water is on the coop over a cookie tin warmer with a 25 watt bulb. We aren't using a heat lamp, and I'm worried about our 2 ladies.

But it's soooo cold.

Just reassure me that they're fine, please.
your chickens are fine, unless they are shivering and lithargic, they are warm enough..

Mine are always let out... they don't like to touch the snow though LOL
They can go in the coop if the need to and I have wind barriers around the run...
Looks kinda junky, but I would rather they have the option to run around outside the coop then to be literally cooped up
