Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Do you have other goats and do they lead? I'd take a goat on a leash and let them call the doe to them.....just a thought, it works for loose horses.
This sounds like a good idea!!/ I used it to catch an escaped rooster. He knew he was headed for freezer camp, I walked around with a hen, coxing her to cluck and he finally came out of hiding.Did get an extra week out of the deal though
anyhow sure hope you fined her soon

count your blessings, I get 1 to 3 a day out of 30 hens. most approaching 6yrs., some molting and 1 to young. Really need to get tough and cull some old birds

A lot of it has to due with the length of the day, rather than temperature. The winter solstice is approaching quickly, I am looking forward to days getting longer afterwards!
We've been giving them an extra 2 hours of light.....hmmmmmm. Hurray for winter solstice and longer days! When I took their new bag of feed in today I went into the actual coop and looked around and darned if they didn't have a nest made under the nest boxes with 6 eggs in it! Guess I know where to look if production goes way down again!

Started this morning, printing flyers, and the first place to go in our community for anything is the post office. Everything goes through there. It's a small community. So post office, general store and started back toward the house to start sticking flyers in doors... and I hear her bleating!! Neighbor down the road caught her and tied her in the yard out front. (I missed her the first time I went buy). So, she is safe at home. DH is relieved he can come sleep in the house now.....

I'm going to run out to the store to get some gift cards, one for the parents and one for their kids, since it were the kids who heard her last night and told them.

She's such a tiny thing... only 15 pounds or so. I have her in one of the dog runs to keep her quiet... hay, minerals, water and straw to snuggle in my turkey nest box. I put the boys in with her to help them bond better.

That was a great suggestion on taking the boys with me. Hopefully, it won't happen again.....but, she is a goat after all!
Here she is!
Oh YAY!! I am so glad you got her back safe and sound!!

Went on a "walk about" through our woods and came across a wonderful discovery....a pile of larger rocks, concrete blocks and slate!!!! It had been there awhile' with mossy and algae growth, but this frugal momma is quite pleased with her discovery. Our home was purchased as an estate, so there have been many discoveries along the way in the five years we have been here. Needless to say, the outdoor patio will be a welcomed and less costly addition this next summer

I couldn't be happier to be the benefactor in 'one mans trash is anothers treasure'. Feeling very thankful right now; I have all winter to decide where the new patio should go too

Thank goodness for kind neighbors!! Good idea to teach the kids that kindness is rewarded....never know when you may benefit from the kids sharp eyes and ears again. Goats are quite the escape artists, even for the most solid fences. My friend's goats walk up the fence all the time; she is always walking the fence line to ensure that it hasn't been trod down (even with an electric strand). Just glad all is well and she is back unharmed and uninjured. As for your DH, glad he is outta the doghouse

Oh my gosh! I'm glad you found your goat! My smallest ewe can squeeze through the woven wire fence but luckily she never goes ALL the way through and being a sheep, doesn't really have any desire to leave her buddies. But it does make me nervous.

I found a squirrel pelt in our barn the other day, that I can only assume one of the barn cats dragged in. It's in good shape. Someone in the neighborhood was eating squirrel because it was nicely cut. I hope they don't miss the pelt. I should nail it to a tree out front just for kicks.

Oh my, your roos went after the hens? Thats terrible! They can be rough on them, but wow thats crazy!
Yes. It was awful! Too much testosterone... not anymore!!!
Here she is!

LOL
Is it stiff or soft?

I am SO glad she is home safe again! Very relieving!

Are you sure she is only15lbs? You said in an earlier post she is six months old. Something is definitely not right if she is that small at that age! I have a slow growing Nigerian too (no worms, coccidia, or nutrition issues), but she was still bigger than your gal at that age. Maybe have a fecal run on her, make sure she's clean?

I will probably have to cull one of the pullets. Her poopy bottom got better, and since going out to the coop has gotten a lot worse. :(
Have you tried giving yogurt every day for a bit? Perhaps some cranberry? She could have too much e coli in her gut

What's a good month to put eggs under an un-proven broody for early spring chicks?
A broody will be broody if and only when she decides. Not even with bribing with big comfey nests of eggs; she will always go broody at the least convenient time. Trust me on this one! I didn't eat eggs all summer just TRYING to entice my orpington!

And would I need to introduce a roo to the big girls the same way I introduced the younger pullets (look-but-no-touch for awhile and then supervised together for a few days) or will a roo generally be more assertive right off the bat?
Depends on the roo, you could try in the evening and if he turns out to be too aggressive you could seperate after dark. (Easier to catch, not a whole day of stress on the girls if he turns out to be rough) I have had both kinds of roos, the one i have now was a total sweetheart right away. Probably depends on age, too. Right at puberty is bad, if they've gone through puberty and are gentle than they are probably good. ? Every roo i've had has been different!

Is there a place you could put in a little patio near your chickens, and have a little roof and have a little shaded nook away from the house to relax? (Put some bushes or something to give privacy ) I'm picturing roses and tea with friends? :D If you have the $$ a screened retreat with a porch swing would be priceless.
