Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

*sigh* So it turns out my chicken coop is a sieve when the downpours come from the east. It's raining in there, poor chickies. I let them out into the barn with the sheep, where it's dry. When it's over their bedding is going to be soaked and then it's going to freeze. So much for keeping the coop dry. What a mess.

Our snow started as predicted about 7:30 this morning. We have about an inch now. My coop also doesn't do well in east winds but it's snow that is the problem. Hopefully there will be no snow drifts this time. Ladyr - I'm glad you have a place to put everyone so they can stay dry. I opened up the pop doors so everyone could go back and forth between coops because a couple of the little hens like to use the nest boxes in the big coop. Once the wind picks up I will go shut everyone up. I didn't get my netting down yesterday and the snow is taking it down today, so I will have that mess to clean up later.

thread here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/730663/dog-attack#post_10107657 it has pics. they're obviosly in shock, so i'm trying to not be hasty. i can't even look ovre at the run right now. DH said he would clean it up when he got home.

seeing photos makes a huge difference. Nova gave good advice, keep clean and cover with antibiotic.

Do not seal a puncture wound, they need to heal from the inside out and to allow drainage. Puncture wounds often get things pushed down into the wound so you don't want to seal that in. Open wounds like your birds have, need to heal the same way.

If you had large flaps of skin and no damage underneath, then I would try to seal it back up.

Keep the roosters away from them so they can heal. They'll be ok without feathers over winter, but if youwant, try some aprons.

Raz, I was wondering how things were going for you. So your case has been postponed? I was curious how they would handle it after the rewording for the GAAMPs was cancelled. I hope it works in your favor.

We got 4 or 5 inches last night, and school is cancelled for the day. I'm REALLY hoping there's school tomorrow since DS1's snowpants, boots, and gloves are all in his locker and not having those for christmas break would really really stink.

Just checked on the battered bird, and she didn't make it through the night. I'm not really surprised with how she was looking. Pictures weren't going the extent of her damages justice. She did, however, lay an egg this morning......so maybe all the straining from that contributed. Either way, all of the birds I got from my BIL this spring are gone now.

I'm considering getting a few birds as replacement from CL since there are several listings for POL hens or under-1-year-old hens. We'd just have to figure out a place to quarantine them. Hmmmmmmm. Chicks aren't an option until April, and we'd like to hatch some of our own then. Decisions decisions.

Sorry she didn't make it :(

X2. :( My friend have 5 very nice Isa Browns for sale if you are interested. He has 18, and trying to downsize for the winter. If you don't want them, is there is anyone here that want 5 good layers? They are $8.00 each. He is in Coopersville.

News flash!

Annabelle had piglets last night!!! 7 of them! She had 6 before, and the other 2 sows had 6 too, so this litter is the largest we got so far! So the count of piglets this year is-25, but 4 died very young, 1 got stolen, so 20 now, and 3 more sows expecting soon. :th Anyone want some bacon??? lol

I watched 4 pop out, and taking their first breath, it was cool. 3 were already out when I went to check on her when I got home from work last night at 10:20. Each piglets came out about 20 minutes apart. I stayed in that tiny shed until 12:20 am.

4 males, 3 females

I have 8 one-pound jars. I don't have PayPal, but we can work something out if you would like me to mail some. Or set up a relay link from here to there.

I'm in a holding pattern as far as the Case of the Criminal Chickens goes. I have a motion hearing and then a trial date scheduled in January. Another guy on my street had his case postponed until after mine and the one that was moved has already had the trial and is waiting for the ruling. Overall, we are pretty upbeat that we will prevail.

Now if I can just get appointed to those GAAMP committees...
