Leg scale mites are killed by suffocation. Any oil or salve that is save to apply to your skin will work. I had a couple of old hens that their legs were horrible looking from the raised scales. They looked so bad I was considering putting the birds down.

We had some Avon Skin So Soft in a spray bottle so I used that. After a liberal application to their legs both hens at least smelled better. The very next day I could see an improvement and applied the oil again. At the end of a week and only the two applications their scales were completely flat against the leg shanks.

Lady, have you tried an elimanation or paleo diet? Literally, going ALL NATURAL? Nothing processed, that includes noodles unless you make your own? Sometimes scratch cooking can be a real PITA, but sometimes it is the processes of food production that cause a lot of the problems we are finding in our mental development and functioning. Nutrition is so very overlooked.
I have been diagnosed with bipolar and borderline low blood sugar, but going mostly natural has eliminated it! I had tried meds too, no difference or made me more depressed than i already was. Got chickens and started cooking from scratch and voila! Better. I took a lot of long walks, too. Took 3 years, but to look at where i was and where i am now...... I almost think i was detoxing, without meaning to. The birds are a getaway, and force me to think outside myself (I don't have kids or they would do that too)

I agree that diet is overlooked by drs too much, because something as simple as an allergen can cause severe emotional symptoms too. I am mildly allergic to wheat, and my old life of factory work with no sleep and too much caffeine, too many junk goodies (filled with wheat and preservatives) to keep me going was literally taking my health. My reactions to the different meds weren't as severe as the other stories, but bottom line i wasn't myself, i am glad to be "me" again!

I too was chastised for not staying on the different meds, even though they weren't helping. I doubt they would believe that I fixed myself with diet and exercise, i would probably get "delusional thinking" added to my list of symptoms!

Ok... got an idea to bounce off some of ya'll. I use clamp lights to keep my waterers liquid. I was/am thinking of building a 2x2x2 watering cage, with one side open, top of chicken wire for the light to sit and tied down, and 3 sides of heavy cardboard to keep the heat focused on the wateres. I would consider a cookie tin heater, but I have several inches of leaves in the runs and I also use plastic waterers... So, I worry over fire and melting... maybe being a little to "over thinking it"... maybe not. Anyway, thoughts on the watering cage? My only cost would be the time, and $8 on wood for the three cages. I have all the other material already.
Idk, but the kind of watering thingy that i bought is good for plastic, too. I am using it in my big rubber dish, and everything looks fine and the water has not frozen since i put it in there.

Skin so soft........ perhaps the fact that it is an oil, but the kind that penetrates deeper into the skin than most? I think the reason that the smothering of mites is often hard to do is because vasaline and regular oils don't get into the deeper layers where the mites are hiding. You May have something there Sam!

The reason i used the permethrin is because it kills mites on contact, no need to smother really. I used the thicker base to help it "stick" longer. On lowering the dose for banties or not, i put that as a caution because i haven't had to use it on little guys yet, and i haven't been able to find enough info on it to know for sure if the original dose is OK. I figure better safe than sorry, i would be devastated if my advice hurt or killed someone's pet! So i figured to try the littler dose first, to be safe. If anyone does try it down the line, can you post whether the little dose or the big dose did the trick?

One thing I did notice, it seemed as if my rooster was more attentive of those hens after treatment. I don't know if it was because they smellled so nice or because of their smooth shiny legs.

I had many, many quotes... maybe it is a good thing the internet ate them...

CR Thank you for sharing!!!

I had a very strange reaction to birth control (Loestrin24Fe)... I took it for 3.5 months for a lady-medical problem I was having. I was told it was the lowest dose of birth control I could get... because I did not want to be on BC.
The reactions I had were crazy... I was not me for sure and I had terrible mood swings and would cry if a comercial had kids or animals in it (I am not a cryer!!!!) There were other issues to but they were not pleasent to experience much less to hear about so I will spare you the details...
It cured my lady issue up and I stopped taking it.
All the other symptoms cleared up within days! Thank goodness!

My dog Gunny took himself for a walk today after getting in trouble...
I got the kid dressed and started following tracks when I realized the neighbors dog was also out for a walk on her own... so tracking was futile.
I told my friend that he was gone and she called the police to see if anyone had found him...
Well, after waht seemed like forever (maybe an hour) he came bounding out of the woods like he was never gone.
DS had a blast playing in the snow and we were both soaked with snow by the time we got in.
The chickens are very unhappy with the cold white stuff that is pouring from the sky... they won't come out of the covered run...
I should go give them some warm water.

OK I am going to talk very serious about something. I hope that EVERYBODY will PLEASE read this even if you don't like my posts.
I am sharing this information in hopes that it may help someone. It is not intended for any other purpose.
If by chance you notice changes in yourself or someone around you. PLEASE DO NOT just pass it off. Try to determine a cause. Now more specifically what I am talking about is mood / emotional changes. There could be an underlying cause that could be solved very easy but if left unchecked could be terrible.
OK so I guess about the only way I know how to relay this is to jump under the bus. Please try to understand that I am only doing this in attempt to help others and maybe in that some may have a better understanding of me, especially those who have met in person.
OK so here is my point. If you notice changes give a good look at things such as MEDICATIONS !!!!
CR, I can totally appreciate you sharing that and I hope it can help in some way at some time. My family just went through that very thing this past year with my eldest daughter. She gets terrible migraines and other symptoms and last year her doctor prescribed a med that was for high blood pressure, but known to help with migraines. We had no clue the damage it would do to her physically and mentally. Thankfully, even though it took 6 months to get in, he also set her up with a pediatric neurologist. By the time she saw the neuro it was so bad and we were so scared for her health and what she could possibly have (such as a tumor). The second the neuro read what she was taking she told us to stop that because that was a massive part of the problem. DD had to have scans done to judge any level of damage and had to be weaned off the incorrect med. Thankfully, scans came out mostly ok, but the weaning wasn't pretty. The neuro declared her allergic to the bad med (and others in its group) and to imitrex (she had a bad reaction) so that no one would ever give it to her again. I'm happy to say my daughter is doing better. She still has a way to go and has the migraines and other issues, but with the meds she is taking now they aren't nearly as debilitating as they first were and got on the bad med. I have to say, I felt like lady in that we were trying to stick it out. We just didn't realize. And I have kicked myself for it over and over and probably always will. It's hard as a mom to see one of your kids go through that level of pain and such and realize it didn't have to be that way.

Totally agree. That's what I've found on this convoluted journey. I don't do anything probably that has a label like Paleo or Vegan or Primitive or whatever but I do eat as much natural foods as I can now, because I am SUPER sensitive to additives it turns out. Discovered that on my own, I did. Dr. never mentioned looking into diet. So yeah, I bake my own snacks and most dinners and breads, etc. As little preservatives and chemicals, corn syrups, soy, caffeine, msg, etc. as possible. I'm lactose intolerant too now, just to add insult to injury. Luckily I'm a stay-at-home mom so I have that time. It really does help, A LOT. I'm really needing to cut back on processed sugars still but it's one thing at a time. But that's one of the reason that getting chickens was so important to me and now getting milk from Daron and pork and beef rom others nearby. My garden is not my hobby, it's my lifeline. I know where it's been and what's in it and I don't care what the "experts" have been saying about regular store-bought veggies being every bit as healthy as expensive organic ones; homegrown garden veggies have so much more packed into them than both, just because of the quality of the soil. As soon as my garden is gone in the fall, my health goes downhill fast and I start feeling really crappy. People make fun and if you're one of those people that's not affected by it then good for you and consider yourself lucky. It really sucks not to be able to just eat whatever the heck modern industry throws on the shelves for cheap. I'm not ungrateful. That's not how it is. I just can't anymore. I grew up on that stuff and I guess my body just one day said, "NO!"
